For the past week, Mortal Kombat’s co-creator Ed Boon has been teasing the addition of new DLC characters. The latest DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 was the Aftermath expansion which released back in May. Mortal Kombat: Aftermath added three new playable characters: Fujin, Sheeva, and RoboCop, as well as three new skin packs.

Last weekend, Ed Boon began tweeting several cryptic clues about the identity of the next DLC character. The first clue was a link to an acapella version of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” to which Boon followed up with, “Open your eyes.. look up to the skies and see.” The next day, Boon tweeted a link to the trailer for the original Nightmare on Elm Street and added in a second tweet, “Hint 2.5 = Its related to the title.”

After a week of silence, Ed Boon took to Twitter to drop a 3rd clue, although this one comes with no follow-up. The tweet simply reads, “Seriously #6 #actualclue3”. Last November it was reported that Nitara (a vampire fighter who first appeared in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance) had been cast in the upcoming Mortal Kombat film reboot, which fueled speculation that she would be the upcoming DLC character. However, with the addition of the number six being a clue, expectations have shifted.

Several perceptive/hopeful Mortal Kombat fans began pointing out what they believe to be proof that Rain will be the next DLC character. First, going back to the original clue, “Open your eyes.. look up to the skies and see.” would be an obvious allusion to rain itself. The second tweet requires a bit more dot-connecting, as several users pointed out that 1984 was the year Prince’s album Purple Rain released (purple being Rain’s primary color in the series). Lastly, Boon’s latest tweet about the number six again supports the Rain theory, as Purple Rain was also Prince’s sixth album. For an added layer of conspiracy theorizing, Phil Collins has an album titled …But Seriously, which makes reference to rain on its sixth track, “I Wish it Would Rain Down.”

1st clue: “Look up to the sky and see” – Rain comes from the sky 2nd clue: 1984 in the title. That’s when Prince’s “Purple Rain” album came out 3rd clue: “Seriously #6” – Purple Rain was Prince’s 6th album It’s definitely Rain pic.twitter.com/Y3zdggdSaL

None of these theories are at all concrete, but they are fun nevertheless. It is also worth mentioning that, while the fanbase seems to be running with the Rain theory, there is also enough ambiguity for other to interpet the clues to mean either Ermac or Havik could be returning to the series (at one point, Mileena was ALSO though to be the next addition, although this now seems less likely). Depending on how fans count them, either Ermac or Rain were the 6th ninja character to be added to the series (Ermac debuted in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 arcade, while Rain is in the arcade intro for the game, but was not playable until the next game), and the Nightmare on Elm Street trailer showed telekinesis being used to fight a character (telekinesis being Ermac’s primary means of attack).

However, the Ermac theory falls apart once hint 2.5 is factored in: the title specifically is the hint. Meanwhile, Havik has also become a viable theory for other fans, as many interpret the six to be referencing the sixth Mortal Kombat game, 2004’s Mortal Kombat: Deception. Havik has not been in a Mortal Kombat game since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in 2008, despite being positively received by fans and critics when he was first added. One less commonly mentioned theory is the idea that maybe there will be multiple character additions, as was the case with Mortal Kombat: Aftermath, but at the end of the day, anyone’s guess is about as good as anyone else’s.
