The upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat movie will focus on the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring, Furious 7), the new film will be the franchise’s first proper trip back to the big screen since 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Like the ‘90s film, the new Mortal Kombat will adapt the video game series of the same title, known for its violent “fatality” finishing moves and fantastical martial arts story.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero are perhaps the two most recognizable characters from all of Mortal Kombat lore. The former is an undead yellow-clad ninja who breathes fire and encourages foes to move closer to him and the latter is a blue-clad ninja with magical ice powers. First appearing in the original Mortal Kombat arcade game, Scorpion and Sub-Zero have always circled one another in the games’ stories. Most installments feature some version of the same few beats – the two belong to rival clans of warriors; Scorpion and his family are killed, presumably by Sub-Zero and his kin; Scorpion is resurrected to enact revenge.

Speaking recently with Entertainment Weekly, director Simon McQuoid revealed the new movie’s own version of the Scorpion/Sub-Zero story, claiming that it will be at the heart of the film. “It is like a family drama with excitingly brutal fighting,” McQuoid said. “That’s the image of this movie for me.” According to McQuoid, the movie opens with an extended flashback sequence detailing the origins of Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero’s (Joe Taslim) rivalry. Set in feudal Japan, the scene shows the feud between the two warriors’ rival clans, which ultimately has gruesome consequences for them both. The film then jumps to the present day, where the repercussions of the old conflict will surely be felt.

Setting the ninjas’ origin story so far in the past is a notable departure from the source material. In the games, Scorpion kills Sub-Zero at the Mortal Kombat tournament, not long after his supposed transgression took place. The new movie seems to be flipping the script on that, with both characters likely already dead and resurrected by the time the modern conflict starts. The core of the story seems to be the same though, which should be a good sign for skeptics of video game movie adaptations.

One big question left by the new Mortal Kombat images and reveals is how the ninjas’ backstory will tie into protagonist and series newcomer Cole Young (Lewis Tan). In the interview, McQuoid alludes to a blood connection between Cole and the past, and it seems likely that he’ll be brought into Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s feud on one side or the other. Given that the action apparently starts with Sub-Zero attempting to kill Cole, a tie to Scorpion may be most likely. Fans will have to continue speculating as to the details while they wait for Mortal Kombat to release on April 16.
