A brand new picture from the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has surfaced, and it offers a detailed look at Shang Tsung. Helmed by Simon McQuoid in his directorial debut and produced by The Conjuring’s James Wan, the 2021 Mortal Kombat film marks the theatrical return of the brutally violent martial arts video game series after a 24-year hiatus. The last movie – the 1997 Mortal Kombat: Annihilation – was universally panned, causing the third film to remain in development hell for several years. But now, the upcoming feature film is looking to change things around by faithfully honoring the MK universe. The new movie, which will bow in cinemas and on HBO Max on April 16, features not only game-accurate Fatalities but also includes original characters from the arcade game, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Jax, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Kano, and the powerful Shang Tsung.

In the original video games, Shang Tsung was a mighty soul-stealing sorcerer who served as the host for the central tournament. He made his debut in the first game, appearing as the major boss villain, before returning to the franchise as a playable character and secondary sub-boss in Mortal Kombat (2011). MK fans probably best-remember Tsung for his cunningness, intellectual sophistication, and arch rivalry against Liu Kang. Although Kang was Tsung’s primary nemesis, the shape-shifting antagonist was also involved in several conflicts with Kung Lao and Kenshi, who resented him for consuming the souls of other beings in order to sustain his own health and life. Tsung’s last appearance was in Mortal Kombat 11. And now, the character is gearing up for his big-screen outing with McQuoid’s film.

On Thursday, Total Film dropped a new picture from the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, showcasing a thorough look at Shang Tsung, who is being played by Marco Polo’s Chin Han. The picture finds the iconic character making a clearly villainous gesture under the spotlight. Although it’s hard to make out what exactly he is doing in the picture, it does appear as if Tsung is radiating some sort of aura. This probably means that the antagonist is preparing to feast on the soul of his opponent, whose hat can be observed in the foreground. The hat resembles the one that Raiden typically wears, so it’s possible Mortal Kombat will showcase an action sequence between them.

As the image demonstrates, Mortal Kombat has paid great attention to Tsung’s casting and authentic characterization. In the picture, Tsung has white, featureless eyes akin to the ones from the game. And he has also donned a dark blue robe with gold and black decorations that closely resemble his outfits in MK3, MKII, and MK 2011. His long black hair, golden-accented trims, and headgear are all intact. What is missing is the sword that he often had holstered at the side of his costume. But that can be neglected as, after all, the movie needs to take some creative liberties with the character.

Although Mortal Kombat has teased multiple looks at Shang Tsung before, this is arguably the most detailed and important glimpse of the character so far. For one, it reflects how much effort the new movie is making to honor its source material. And additionally, it also gives fans and viewers a rough idea about Tsung’s arc, powers, and matchups in the forthcoming film. Overall, Han is a trusted performer whose knack for playing refined, guileful, baddies, like Lau in The Dark Knight, make him a perfect fit to portray Tsung. He’ll give his character the best, bringing to fruition Mortal Kombat’s attempts at genuine storytelling.
