Mortal Kombat Reboot Builds A Whole Universe Says Liu Kang Actor

Ludi Lin, the actor bringing Mortal Kombat’s Liu Kang back to the big screen, teased that plans for the reboot span more than a single film. While Warner Bros’ upcoming reboot will be the third time the classic Mortal Kombat game series has been adapted to the big screen, Lin will be only the second live-action actor to step into the ring as Kang. It had been Death Race’s Robin Shou in both of the prior live-action installments.

It will have been 26 years since the first Mortal Kombat film released in theaters when the reboot opens in January 2021. Originally having been developed as a three film series, the third was abandoned after a disappointing turn at the box office. In development by Aquaman & Saw producer James Wan, and newcomers director Simon McQuoid and screenwriter Greg Russo, the new Mortal Kombat film appears to be heading towards the darker end of tone. Its anticipated R-rating will be in line with production house Atomic Monster Productions’ other productions, the Conjuring’s franchise of films.

While speaking with JayneStars, Lin talked about his work on the Mortal Kombat film, and how he feels a number of parallels between himself and Kang. He had gotten into numerous fights as a kid, and like his character, he would stand up to those who would pick on the weak. Beyond his own experiences, he also spoke of McQuoid’s attachment to the Mortal Kombat world:

Director Simon McQuoid is very devoted to this world. He is very passionate about building a universe of Mortal Kombat, rather than one single fight film. He started a back story of the entire world and made sure to flesh out the characters, so that people feel it’s not just a video game and there is some substance behind it.

While McQuoid is a newcomer to feature film direction, he’s no stranger behind a camera or to the cadence and tone of video games. His resume boasts of having a lengthy, award-winning career in commercials, including high-profile national campaigns for Playstation and Halo. While there is not a lot of information that has yet emerged from the production around the Mortal Kombat storyline, this is the first that’s been publicly said about there being potential plans already being considered beyond this single film.

Everyone involved in Mortal Kombat seems to be as attached as the fans are to the game’s universe. Wan had even spoken excitedly that the film will be the first time Mortal Kombat’s famously graphic fatalities would be fully realized on-screen. With an experienced producer, a gritty production house, and a director accustomed to the quick pacing and tone for adapting video games for an audience, they are likely the best combination as might have been hoped for to have a chance at breathing new life into a cinematic franchise that had been nearly written off by the fans and studios 23 years earlier. Fans will get to see for themselves when Mortal Kombat hits theaters next year.
