Mortal Kombat Reboot Theory Cole Young Is Really Johnny Cage

Lewis Tan’s character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, Cole Young, might actually be Johnny Cage. The much-anticipated reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise arrives simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16, with a new collection of Mortal Kombat images and a story synopsis offering a peek behind the movie’s R-rated curtain. Cole’s centrality to the film’s story is a little surprising, considering he is an original character unique to the movie rather than one from the games, but this could actually hint at there being more to him.

A perplexing aspect of the Mortal Kombat character roster is the complete absence of Johnny Cage. One of the core characters of the franchise from the very beginning, Johnny is also one of its most popular, channeling a Hollywood action star with genuine fighting skills in the vein of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Yet, despite bringing aboard such Mortal Kombat luminaries as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade, Jax, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and others, Johnny Cage being AWOL from the film can’t help but be noticeable. Unless, of course, he’s actually hiding in plain sight under the name of Cole Young.

Lewis Tan is quite the rising action star himself, showing his charisma and immense physical talents in acclaimed martial arts-driven shows like Into the Badlands and Wu Assassins. Bringing him into Mortal Kombat is a no-brainer, but it’s also a bit odd that he’s not portraying a character deriving from the games themselves. However, disguising Johnny Cage as Cole Young could actually make for an interesting retcon for one of the franchise’s major heroes.

Per the official Mortal Kombat movie synopsis, Cole is an MMA fighter who is pulled into the tournament to defend Earthrealm, and such an origin could work in creating a new take on Johnny. Known to be a bit on the egotistical side in the games, the reboot’s version of Johnny might’ve fallen on some hard times, and now fights under the pseudonym of Cole Young to stay under the radar. Far from being the household name that Johnny Cage is known as, Cole might’ve actually been a failed action star who never hit the big time, now making ends meet as a fighter operating under a different name. Conversely, Cole might’ve reverted to his real name after his career failed with Johnny Cage having been his stage name, which would fit right in with John Carlton being Johnny’s real name outside of his career in Hollywood.

If Mortal Kombat is positioning a new character like Cole as its focal point, that would certainly be an unconventional and interesting move for the film to make, and it would add something different to the Mortal Kombat canon. Tan most definitely has the talent to stand out in portraying a completely original character alongside mainstays from the games. It also goes without saying that Cole Young will likely be added to future Mortal Kombat games after the film’s release.

Still, the absence of Johnny Cage is something that fans of the franchise have noticed, but it just might be that he’s simply flying under another name this time. As Cole Young, Lewis Tan will undoubtedly add to what is sure to be some incredible action in Mortal Kombat. Retcons, like a potential one in Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s history, can add a lot to an adaptation, and it’d be quite the additional trick if the reboot were to unexpectedly reveal that Cole was actually Johnny Cage all along.
