Mortal Kombat Scorpion & SubZeros Rivalry Was Planned From the Start

Few members of the Mortal Kombat cast are quite as iconic as its pair of brightly clad ninja warriors, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. The two Mortal Kombat rivals have become practically synonymous with the series, and their feud dates back to the very origins of the MK’s creation.

At first glance, Sub-Zero and Scorpion seem like carbon copies of each other. They were once, at least aesthetically, pretty darn close. Throughout the first few Mortal Kombat games, both ninjas shared the same model, with only a minor palette swap differentiating the two. But while the they also shared similar fighting styles and had intertwined origin stories, the two characters are actually quite distinct. The blue ninja, Sub-Zero, hails from an ancient clan of ninja-like Chinese warriors called the Lin Kuei. Sub-Zero’s fighting style centers around cryomancy, or ice manipulation. Meanwhile, the yellow ninja, Scorpion, is an undead member of the Japanese Shirai Ryu ninja clan. He bears a grudge against the first Sub-Zero (who would eventually be replaced by his brother) for purportedly slaughtering him, his clan, and his family.

The relationship between Scorpion and both Sub-Zero iterations is one of the main focuses of Mortal Kombat’s story, even leading up to and including the series’ most recent games. As one might expect, such a storied rivalry has real-world origins. In a recent Twitter thread, Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias detailed the story behind Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s development history. According to him, the two’s backstories have their roots in old martial arts movies and Asian mythology.

Mortal Kombat: The Story Behind Sub-Zero & Scorpion’s Creation

Before Mortal Kombat was even a solid idea in Ed Boone and John Tobias’ heads, the two were just beginning to work on what would become the legendary fighting game series. Tobias delved into Asian mythology and drew inspiration from a book called China’s Ninja Connection. It gave a dubious account of a Chinese assassin and thief clan known as the Lin Kuei, which supposedly went on to inspire Japan’s ninjas.

After that, Tobias scribbled out his first notes for Sub-Zero’s character concept, a mysterious ninja from a mythical Chinese clan bearing the same name as the one Tobias read about. From there, he and Boone developed the idea of a rival ninja from a Japanese clan of their own design. The two borrowed influences from martial arts myths and movies to develop a set of rivals who would also conveniently fill their desire to save memory by including a pair of palette-swapped characters.

The rest is history. The rival ninjas Tobias and Boone created would form much of the foundation of Mortal Kombat’s success. They helped prop up MK’s themes of martial arts and mysticism and provided an engaging story using recognizable character archetypes. All of this amounted to two characters with emotional, interrelated stories, cool powers, and attention-grabbing aesthetics. These elements make up the recipe for any good fighting game character, and the legacy of Mortal Kombat’s all-star duo is proof of that fact.
