Mortal Kombat Shao Kahn & Sindel Echo Joker & Harley Quinn in Art

In creating a couple’s portrait for Mortal Kombat villains Shao Kahn and Sindel, a talented artist channeled Alex Ross’ iconic Joker and Harley Quinn art. Ross’ often-referenced cover art dates back to a 1999 one-shot, Batman: Harley Quinn, penned by award-winning Batman: The Animated Series scribe Paul Dini. The piece captures Joker and Harley mid-Tango, both smiling gleefully as the Joker looks on with a patented rictus grin plastered to his face.

Oddly enough, Sindel and Harley bear quite a bit in common – prior to the former’s Mortal Kombat 11 retcon, that is. Both of their original backstories painted them as kind, loving women, who remained as such before meeting the larger-than-life, sadistic men who later became their love interests. Retcon or no, Sindel feeds off violence whenever Shao Khan’s near. Of course, the same holds true for Harley in the presence of her beloved Mr. J. It’s fitting, then, that an artist would bring the parallel to life in Mortal Kombat fan art modeled after Alex Ross’ famous work on the Batman rogues.

Digital painter Esau Murga recently showcased stunning artwork of Mortal Kombat’s Shao Khan and Sindel modeled after Alex Ross’ Batman: Harley Quinn cover art. Instead of Joker holding tight to Harley mid-Tango, Shao Khan shares a similar pose with Queen Sindel. It’s a gorgeous piece of work, which managed to catch the attention of Mortal Kombat Co-Creator Ed Boon. So impressed was Boon by Esau Murga’s effort that he shared the artist’s work in the following Twitter post:

The above art has been replicated myriad times, including once in live-action during a Suicide Squad (2016) scene between Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Without a doubt, Esau Murga’s homage with Mortal Kombat villains Shao Kahn and Sindel counts among the most impressive recreations of Alex Ross’ memorable piece.

The Outworld ruler and Scream Queen have remained staples in the long-running fighting series for over two decades. Shao Kahn first appeared in 1993’s Mortal Kombat II, most notably wreaking havoc as the game’s final boss encounter. Sindel debuted a couple of years later in the 1995 entry, Mortal Kombat 3. Despite appearing in 1990s live-action film franchise, neither of these characters showed their faces in the 2021 reboot movie that launched earlier this year.
