Mortal Kombat’s Chaosrealm Explained What It Is & Where It Came From

Within the Mortal Kombat universe are different realms that kombatants call home. The realm that players perhaps know of best is Earthrealm, which is essentially planet Earth. Outworld, Orderrealm, and Netherrealm are the other well-known realms. There are also lesser-known and non-canon realms in the Mortal Kombat mythos, such as Heaven, Dreamrealm, and the Nightmare Realm. But perhaps the most mysterious of the main Mortal Kombat realms is Chaosrealm.

Realms in the Mortal Kombat universe can be explained as different dimensions that host one world. These realms are said to exist in different planes of reality. The realms are protected by the Elder Gods. It is known that Raiden was the protector of Earthrealm until the ascension of Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat 11.

When talking with Ars Technica, Dominic Cianciolo, story and voice over director at NetherRealm Studios, answers various fan questions regarding unsolved mysterious within the Mortal Kombat universe. One of the questions involved the mysterious Chaosrealm. Cianciolo reveals the origins of the realms explaining that the realms came to be after “The Elder Gods defeated the One Being and split the One Being into pieces. Those pieces became the realms.” In regards to Chaosrealm, Cianciolo states that Chaosrealm was included in those pieces of One Being.

What The MK Games Reveal About Chaosrealm

While Cianciolo doesn’t go into any detail beyond the origins of the realms, Chaosrealm is mentioned in Shang Tsung’s ending in the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath DLC. Raiden informs Shang Tsung that Chaorealm would be one of the next realms to be conquered along with Orderrealm. Geras, Kronika’s creation and servant, is also sent to Chaosrealm in the Aftermath DLC by Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, and Fujin. The realm also makes a brief cameo in Mortal Kombat 10 in Noob Saibot’s ending. Noob chooses to stay in Chaosrealm while aiming to take control of Netherrealm.

Chaosrealm, as the name suggests, is said to be filled with chaos. Mortal Kombat: Deception’s Konquest Mode suggests that the inhabitants of this realm, Chaosrealmers, practice chaos as a religion and deem cemeteries as sacred places. Chaosrealm is also home to an aging pool, where those who step into it grow older. While other realms have several notable inhabitants, Chaosrealm doesn’t have many known natives. Only Havik is a known Chaosrealmer. Despite the realm not having many notable residents, there are some known characters who do roam Chaosrealm. The Black Dragon clan, which is led by Kano, have occasionally used Chaosrealm as a refuge.

Chaosrealm is the most mysterious of the six main realms in the Mortal Kombat universe. It’ll likely continue to be mysterious until it is fully explored in a game. It seems like a fitting setting, given the chaotic nature of the Mortal Kombat universe. Perhaps if Shang Tsung’s Aftermath ending is canon players will be able to fulfill his will and one day conquer Chaosrealm. Or maybe, if Shinnok is revived, Chaosrealm could be his new fortress. Whatever NetherRealm Studios has planned next, room could be made for a little bit of chaos.
