When Mortal Shell’s The Virtuous Cycle expansion goes live on August 18, fans will get to claim and keep the content at no cost during its first five days on the market. The advent of DLC and its status as a freebie marks a celebratory occasion – the one-year anniversary of Mortal Shell’s August 2020 release date.

A Soulslike experience, the action RPG from developer Cold Symmetry presents players with many a challenge throughout its runtime. There’s a twist to the Soulslike formula in this particular role-playing title, though. The remnants, or shells, of defeated warriors lay scattered across the tattered landscape, inviting players to possess them to gain new skills and abilities. In many respects, this novel mechanic serves as the primary draw for Mortal Shell, though fans have clearly grown enamored with other aspects of the adventure since Cold Symmetry’s post-launch support continues.

On the one-year anniversary of Mortal Shell’s release, August 18, Cold Symmetry will deploy The Virtuous Cycle, an all-new expansion complete with a roguelike mode, transforming axe-katana weapon, and extra shell. Players across all platforms will have access to the DLC free of charge for five days. When the promotional period comes to an end, The Virtuous Cycle will bear a price tag of $7.99, publisher Playstack shared in a press release. August 18 additionally marks the day on which Steam players can finally jump into the core Mortal Shell experience. The Virtuous Cycle’s new roguelike gameplay should provide fans and newcomers alike with plenty to sink their teeth into and the axe-katana may prove just as exciting. Notably, the transforming weapon borrows from Bloodborne’s trick weapons, tools that boast alternate versions packed in one.

Mortal Shell originally launched consoles and PC to mixed reviews across the board, its various flaws detracting from an otherwise promising Dark Souls-inspired adventure. Cold Symmetry’s debut title still managed to perform appreciably, reaching 500,000 copies sold as of March 2021, according to Playstack. The publisher confirmed the sales data earlier this year amid the release of Mortal Shell’s enhanced edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
