Mothra Makes Godzillas Weirdest Monster Possible For The MonsterVerse

Thanks to Mothra in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the weirdest monster in Toho’s Godzilla movies – King Caesar – is now possible for the MonsterVerse. King Caesar is an unusual, dog-like kaiju known for his one-time alliance with Godzilla against Mechagodzilla in the 1970s.

As the MonsterVerse moves forward, it could introduce new Titans to help Godzilla in the struggles ahead. Similar to some of Toho’s Godzilla movies, the King of the Monsters may need to rely on help from some of his fellow Titans against future adversaries, especially if he’s ever opposed by more than one at a time. If Rodan isn’t around, Godzilla could be joined by some of the MonsterVerse’s original Titans, such as Methuselah or Behemoth. Alternatively, Legendary could acquire the rights to more Toho properties and use them to aid Godzilla. Legendary may have already used three of biggest names in Toho’s library, but there are plenty of other enticing options available to them.

A dozen heroic monsters have appeared alongside Godzilla in his battles against prominent villains like King Ghidorah, Gigan, and his robotic counterpart. Rodan and Mothra have already been adapted to the MonsterVerse in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, with only one of the two getting a chance to team up with Godzilla. Other Toho kaiju could soon join the MonsterVerse as well, whether it be in the fight against Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong or in Godzilla 3 against some other nemesis. High on the list of Godzilla’s allies audiences are hoping to see next is Anguirus, followed by King Caesar, who is arguably the most bizarre monster ever to appear in a Godzilla movie. Before King of the Monsters, it would have been difficult to imagine him being worked into a future Godzilla installment, but now things have changed. Here’s who King Caesar is, and how Mothra has made him a real possibility for the MonsterVerse now.

Toho’s King Caesar Explained

Mothra Makes Godzillas Weirdest Monster Possible For The MonsterVerse

The plot of 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla revolved around a mystical guardian deity known as King Caesar. Worshiped by the people of Okinawa, King Caesar was a two-legged, red-eyed monster whose looks were inspired by the Shisa lion statues in Japan. The monster also had the characteristics of a dog, as his ears would perk up whenever he was alert. Curiously, he fought with the movements and footwork of a martial artist, rather than a giant monster. Though never mentioned in the movie, concept art and a diagram of his body from a Godzilla encyclopedia suggest that physiologically speaking, King Caesar may be even stranger than he appears. It would seem that the creature is a golem of some sort.

For centuries, King Caesar dwelled within a mountain in Okinawa. Given his great power and the stories passed down from generation to generation about his reputation as the region’s protector, the human characters in the movie came to believe that he was their only hope of defeating Mechagodzilla. After turning to the descendants of a family with a connection to King Caesar, an ancient song was performed in front of his resting place in the mountain. The lyrics of the song awoke King Caesar from his slumber and allowed him to join forces with Godzilla against his opponent. Together, the monsters succeeded in defeating Mechagodzilla. King Caesar returned to his mountain and wasn’t seen again until Godzilla: Final Wars, where he was one of several kaiju mind-controlled into fighting the titular monster.

How Mothra Makes King Caesar Possible For The MonsterVerse

Mothra Makes Godzillas Weirdest Monster Possible For The MonsterVerse

Before Godzilla: King of the Monsters, King Caesar wouldn’t have fit well into the MonsterVerse. Being bizarre was only part of his problem. The mystical nature of the character wouldn’t have worked, as the world established in 2014’s Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island left no room for something as fantastic as a guardian deity that can be summoned by singing an ancient song. But, Godzilla: King of the Monsters went there anyway with Mothra. Previously, the MonsterVerse was a world built on elements of science fiction, but King of the Monsters moved it a bit further into the fantasy genre when it introduced Mothra, a benevolent Titan whose memories are passed down genetically to her offspring, enabling her to be reborn again and again endlessly.

The movie even found a way to believably incorporate the Twin Fairies, the two tiny women who accompanied Mothra in Toho’s movies. In the MonsterVerse version of Mothra’s story, the Twin Fairies are represented by Zhang Ziyi’s characters. The pair are descendants of a cult entrusted with watching over Mothra. Typically, when Mothra emerges from her egg, she’s greeted by singing from her Twin Fairies, but since this didn’t happen in the movie, her reaction was a bit more hostile than usual. Given all the mythos surrounding Mothra in King of the Monsters, King Caesar existing in the MonsterVerse doesn’t seem like a stretch now. There’s no reason why Mothra has to be the only mystical creature on the planet whose awakening is triggered by music.

How (& When) King Caesar Can Be Introduced

King Caesar and Mothra have a lot in common, but that wouldn’t necessarily be problematic for his MonsterVerse debut. Though both monsters are awakened in the same way, it won’t be repetitive for a Godzilla movie to do that with King Caesar, nor would it make Mothra less unique. That’s because much of what’s been established about Mothra hasn’t actually been shown. Mothra’s egg being surrounded by natives and her Twin Fairies singing to her is not something audiences had a chance to see. A sequence like this could be reserved for King Caesar’s awakening.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters made it possible for King Caesar to be unleashed on the MonsterVerse at any time. He wasn’t among the 17 confirmed Titans, but the movie intentionally left the door open for more Toho kaiju by revealing that the number of known Titans is still going up. King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty used King Caesar as an example when talking about the Titans who could be discovered at some point in the future.

If he does appear, what will the MonsterVerse do with him? Unless King Caesar is a secret Titan in Godzilla vs. Kong, it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to follow in his Toho counterpart’s footsteps and fight Mechagodzilla, especially since a proper introduction would take a considerable amount of screen time. However, Godzilla vs. Kong could set him up for a later appearance in Godzilla 3, where he could take part in a battle against a major Toho villain, such as SpaceGodzilla, Destoroyah, Biollante, or a different monster entirely.
