If the full trailer is any indiction, the final season of Mr. Robot looks as though it will end the series with a bang. The Emmy-winner from creator Sam Esmail helped turn USA’s programming in a new direction, as the ultra-dark and stylish drama brought mystery, intrigue, and plenty of mind-bending twists to the cable network, becoming one of the most talked about new shows on television in 2015. Since then, the series has had its ups and downs, but after an extended hiatus it will see the story of Elliot Alderson and his imaginary friend Mr. Robot reach what looks to be a bloody conclusion with season 4.

The last time the series was on TV was the season 3 finale, ‘shutdown-r,’ which aired on December 13, 2017. Since then, both Esmail and series star Rami Malek filled their time away from the series by directing and executive producing Amazon’s conspiratorial series Homecoming, with Julia Roberts, and by winning a Best Actor Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. As breaks from your day job go, those aren’t too shabby, but thankfully both Esmail and Malek have returned to make sure the series comes to an end as only Mr. Robot can.

Esmail has teased that Mr. Robot season 4 will be like a long Christmas special, which seems evident in the new trailer, as a mournful holiday tune plays over much of the roughly minute-long video. And while that thematic approach feels oddly fitting for the series, as it allows Esmail to compress a lot of story into a relatively short period of time — something he’s had great success with in the last few seasons — it also makes Mr. Robot’s fall premiere all the more appropriate. Though the series may not garner the same attention as it did in season 1, the promise of bringing the story to a close, combined with Malek’s Oscar win and his casting as the villain in the 25th James Bond adventure, No Time To Die, suggests Mr. Robot season 4 will be on may viewers’ must-watch list.

Unsurprisingly, the trailer doesn’t give away too many details of what’s to come, as there will no doubt be plenty of twists and turns in the road ahead, no matter how short it seems to be at this point. One thing is for sure, though, it looks like Elliot, Mr. Robot, and everyone else involved in the series is in store for one hell of a bloody Christmas.
