Mr Robot Season 3 Introduces Bobby Cannavales Mysterious Salesman

USA Network’s critically-acclaimed series Mr. Robot has given us our first look at new season 3 cast member Bobby Cannavale, who joins the show as a mysterious car salesman character with a great head of hair. Cannavale leaps aboard the series in a supporting role after one season headlining HBO’s ambitious but ultimately failed Martin Scorsese-produced music industry drama Vinyl.

Mr. Robot season 2 ended on a major cliffhanger that saw lead character Elliot (Remi Malek) being shot and left for dead by Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom), who was revealed to be Mr. Robot’s (Christian Slater) accomplice in the plan to carry out stage 2. Very little has been revealed about what will happen in season 3, except that the story will be about Elliot “trying to bounce back” from being shot at the behest of his own combative alter ego. Series creator Sam Esmail has teased that season 3 will be about the “disintegration” of the relationship between Elliot and Mr. Robot.

In March it was announced that Bobby Cannavale would be joining the mix as a new character in Mr. Robot Season 3, and now USA Network has provided the first glimpse of that character (via THR) – a man named Irving, who is described as a “laconic, no-nonsense used car salesman.” In the image, Cannavale sports a thick mustache, big glasses and a sculpted hair-do, and appears to be involved in an exchange in a cluttered, run-down garage. All the characters on Mr. Robot are visually very distinctive and Cannavale’s Irving is no exception.

Cannavale has almost a Clive Owen thing going in the image – which in the usual Mr. Robot fashion, gives us no real hint about who this man is or how he fits into the overall storyline. The garage setting is very typical of the show, which often goes to grotty-looking, lived-in, underground-ish places to emphasize the sense of mysterious, possibly dangerous things happening not only below the surface of our reality, but often inside the characters’ own minds.

Enigma is the order of the day on Mr. Robot, and Sam Esmail loves to set up characters who appear to be one thing but are later revealed to be something else (sometimes they are even revealed to not actually exist). Cannavale is listed as a series regular for season 3 so his role should be very prominent, whatever it turns out to be.

2017 is turning into a big year for Cannavale, who already appeared as Chef Jeff on Netflix’s comedy Master of None and has a role in the upcoming Dwayne Johnson action movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Cannavale is also set to work with Martin Scorsese again in the director’s Netflix-produced crime drama The Irishman starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel.

Mr. Robot season 3 premieres in October on USA.
