Mr. Robot (released in 2015), starring Rami Malek, officially came to an end in 2019, after four glorious seasons that earned the series some deserved plaudits. Without a doubt, it is one of the best psychological thriller series of all time and there are many reasons for that.
One is the show’s protagonist – Elliot Alderson. There are so many complexities in his personality that one becomes drawn to him. Furthermore, Mr. Robot has been shot in a very unique fashion, which makes it utterly different from the other series’ of a similar genre. Besides Elliot, there are many other characters that capture the viewer’s imagination. So, without further ado, let’s rank some of the best among them.
10 Irving
Irving is a very fun character to watch. He brings some lightheartedness to a very dark show and he works as one of the enforcers of The Dark Army. He is the one who forces FBI agent Dominique to join hands with The Dark Army by threatening her family.
He also helps Tyrell focus his skills in a safe house when The Dark Army and Mr. Robot are preparing for Stage 2. In the end, Irving releases a book he has been working on for a very long time as he takes a holiday from all the chaos.
9 Krista Gordon
Krista is Elliot’s court-appointed therapist and the only one who figured out the mystery surrounding Elliot’s childhood. She has dating problems as she, almost always, chooses the wrong men but that doesn’t affect her professional life.
She is close to Elliot and knows why Mr. Robot came into existence. That’s why Fernando Vera kidnapped Krista, as he wanted to know who Elliot really is. Elliot, in the end, is able to protect Krista. Even though her client put her into all sorts of trouble, she still cares for Elliot and wants what’s best for him.
8 Dominique Di Pierro
Dominique is an FBI agent who is handed the opportunity to investigate the Five/Nine hack. She is a dedicated woman who loves her job and doesn’t really have a personal life.
She doesn’t know that her boss is owned by The Dark Army and therefore, despite coming close to cracking the case, she is always one step behind. Furthermore, Irving, after killing Dominique’s boss, tries to recruit her by threatening her family and he succeeds. In season 4, Dom, with Darlene, decides to leave town but due to a certain miscommunication, Dom is the only one who boards the flight.
7 Angela Moss
Angela is Elliot’s childhood friend and firstly, she works at a cybersecurity company called Allsafe. Initially, she hates E Corp (one of the largest conglomerates in the world as shown in the series) because her mother died due to a factory leak, in which E Corp had a hand. But over time, she joins E Corp, thanks to Price, after Allsafe collapses.
She then gets wound up in the business of Whiterose and slowly becomes obsessed with what Whiterose promises her. When that promise turns out to be false, she loses all of her hope and gets murdered by The Dark Army.
6 Tyrell Wellick
Tyrell is a very complicated man, who from the outside looks like a normal person but he hides some dark secrets. He loves his wife and is obsessed with Mr. Robot and his plan. He helps Elliot in the Five/Nine hack and the subsequent attacks from The Dark Army.
He follows Elliot almost everywhere and when he is about to die, that’s when Elliot realizes that he actually cares about Tyrell. He is a smart man, who, in the end, realizes his dream of becoming the CTO of E Corp, even though it costs him his life.
5 Darlene Alderson
Elliot’s sister Darlene is a part of the gang that executes the Five/Nine hack. She is the only one who Elliot seemingly trusts and just like her brother, she is a brilliant hacker.
While Elliot is caught between his split personalities after the hack, Darlene tries to continue the impact and is caught by the FBI. She acts as an informant for Dominique. But despite that, she helps Elliot in undoing the impact of the hack. She is the one who stays with Elliot till the very end and it’s only fitting.
4 Philip Price
The CEO of E Corp Philip is one of the best characters in Mr. Robot. He is involved with Whiterose and plays his part in the Five/Nine hack, despite him being one of the heads of the company. He is also the father of Angela, which explains his attachment to her.
Furthermore, he is always one step behind Whiterose but when his back is against the ball, he helps Elliot bring down Whiterose and the Deus group. Philip is not necessarily a good man. He is an egomaniac who wants to be the smartest person in a room. And this feeling is clear from the way he talks.
3 Whiterose
The Dark Army leader Minister Zhi Zhang aka Whiterose is one of the most intelligent characters in Mr. Robot and she is obsessed with the quest of finding a “Parallel Universe.” That means, she dedicates all of the Deus Groups’ resources to it.
She is a transgender woman, who leads a double life – one as the notorious leader of The Dark Army and the other as a known Chinese minister. Whiterose is a psychopath who just wants her wishes to come true and she will do anything for that, even kill her associates. She is very smart and knows how to pull the strings without being noticed by the world.
2 Mr. Robot
Elliot’s alter ego Mr. Robot is what the series is all about. He is another one of Elliot’s split personalities and he adopts the face of his father Edward. Whatever he does, it is to protect Elliot and he seems to be all about taking risks.
Mr. Robot is always in harm’s way and he is the mastermind behind the Five/Nine hack. At the start, one feels like he is the bad guy or the anti-hero but as the show goes on, you can clearly see his softer side. Mr. Robot is also more confident than Elliot and kind of an extrovert.
1 Elliot Alderson
It wouldn’t be far fetched to say that Elliot is one of the most unique characters to be the protagonist of a show. Mr. Robot is from his view and there are so many little details in the series that tell you who Elliot is, or who he wants to be.
Elliot is suffering from paranoia, delusions, and worst of all, multiple personality disorder. These problems stem from his abusive childhood and that’s what draws him away from society. He doesn’t trust people easily and he can, sometimes, be evil. But he is not a psychopath as he cares for people and loves them.
