Marvel Studios has offered the first official look at the upcoming Ms. Marvel series — teasing the teen superhero’s idolization of Captain Marvel’s Carol Danvers. Initially devised by Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, Kamala Khan was brought to life by writer G. Willow Wilson in collaboration with artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie. The mold-breaking Pakistani American hero made her debut in 2013’s Captain Marvel #14. Resonating with countless fans, Kamala went on to headline her own titular Ms. Marvel series in 2014. The book garnered widespread attention and even won a Hugo Award.

In the wake of her solo adventures, she teamed up with such heroes as Spider-Man and joined such notable teams as the Champions and the New Avengers. Kamala also featured in several prominent storyline events as ‘Civil War II’ and the ‘Secret Wars’ crossover event. At the 2019 D23 Expo, it was revealed that the character would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Appearing first in her own solo Disney+ series, she would ultimately crossover into the movies. Earlier in 2020, newcomer Iman Vellani landed the titular role. Like her comic book counterpart, it was also confirmed that the MCU’s Kamala Khan would be principally inspired by Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel).

As part of Disney’s annual Investor Day, a sizzle reel for Ms. Marvel was unveiled by Marvel Studios. Mixed with a behind-the-scenes look at Vellani’s casting and how much the character means to those working on the show, fans were afforded their first glimpse at official footage. As well as emphasizing her friendships and family life, Kamala’s hero-worship of Captain Marvel was on prominent display. As well as browsing (and later wearing) a replica costume, several posters could be seen on her bedroom wall. Equally, a sketch of Captain Marvel is given central focus as Kamala seemingly maps out a superhero routine around her home and school life. Check out the full video below:

Plot specifics for Ms. Marvel, however, were kept firmly under wraps — with no indication of what dangers and villains she will face. Such details were reserved for Loki and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which received new official trailers. Several other upcoming Disney+ shows also received additional casting announcements. However, in terms of casting, it was confirmed that Vellani’s Kamala Khan will be in Captain Marvel 2. Both she and Carol Danvers will be joined by Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau. All grown up since the events of Captain Marvel, Monica has a prominent role as a member of S.W.O.R.D in the first official outing of MCU’s Phase 4: WandaVision.

In recent weeks, Ms. Marvel has been plagued by controversy. A hashtag connected to the campaign even trended on Twitter, as many called out some of the rumored casting choices. In response, some of the actors criticized fired back against the accusations levied at them. The sizzle reel was, of course, silent on the issue. However, it demonstrated the show’s commitment to diversity and true representation as much behind the camera as on it. This was most prominent in the confirmation that Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would serve as episode directors. Fans will have to wait and see how everything comes together, and how it intersects with Captain Marvel’s titular hero, when Ms. Marvel is officially released in late-2021.
