The finale of Muppets Now, streaming on Disney+, includes a watermark for a free trial of a well-known VFX software. The show, which was launched by Disney+ to much fanfare earlier this year, including a trailer that showed off what a Zoom call led by Kermit would look like, just released its final episode. The show is a departure from previous Muppets TV series, in that it features a number of segments, each hosted by different Muppets, and supposedly unscripted.
The result is a show that parodies modern TV, calls back to classic versions of The Muppets and makes fun of social media culture. Celebrities like Taye Diggs and Linda Cardelinni appear too, playing versions of themselves. The show is also very meta, with Scooter providing as a behind-the-scenes look at the different segments of the show, shown attempting to get things for the various segments of the show together. A familiar segment sees Scooter talking to Kermit via Zoom, where you can see files ready for upload on his desktop.
Now, Twitter user cegoodman2 has found what appears to be a huge post-production error in the final episode of the show. He tweeted screenshots from the finale showing a watermark from popular visual effects software FX Factory Pro, which is mostly used by YouTubers and certain TV shows. The watermark, which appears three times during Miss Piggy’s influencer parodying segment called “Lifesty(le) with Miss Piggy” even includes the “trial” at the bottom, revealing that Disney hasn’t even paid for the software. But was it a mistake, or a deliberate in-joke? See the tweet for yourself below.
If I needed more proof that Disney doesn’t care about The Muppets, the “Muppets NOW” finale provided it. Tonight’s finale has the FX Factory Pro watermark pop up 3 times AND MADE IT TO THE PLATFORM. This license costs $399. Come on. pic.twitter.com/eQcDLEO3IX
On the surface, it appears that Disney rushed the production, and carelessly left the watermark in without checking. However, there is another explanation, and it has to do with Scooter. Given the central conceit of the show – that Scooter is running around trying to ensure each episode gets screened – this could be a subtle joke about his lack of preparedness. It’s clear from his desktop that Scooter is the one who uploads the video files, so perhaps the watermark is an inside joke from the writers, making fun of the fact that he’s so unprepared he not only forgot to pay for the software, but also left the watermark on Miss Piggy’s segment.
If it is an in joke, though, it’s not very good one as the watermark flashed up very quickly and, as you can see from the tweet, can be misconstrued as a real mistake. Arrested Development did something similar for its debut run of season 4 episodes on Netflix, placing a fake watermark for video pirating software over the flashback portions of episodes. That also confused audiences, but the fact that the software was fake made it clear it was a joke. Here, the software is real. So, the debate is still open. Did Disney+ include a VFX watermark on the final episode of Muppets Now, or was it a subtle joke that simply misfired? If it’s not a joke, then someone at Disney is in big trouble.
