My Hero Academia 10 Major Flaws Of The Anime That Fans Choose To Ignore

The anime My Hero Academia has been around for a few years now, and has accrued acclaim from critics and viewers, not to mention receiving several awards for its unique world and empathetic characterizations. Its protagonists are generally sweet and conscientious (except Bakugo), and its antagonists are complex and troubled, providing necessary balance to the narrative.

On the other hand, My Hero Academia exhibits problems that fans dismiss as inconsequential, and they’re right to do so most of the time, but there are a few that are simply hard to ignore. That being said, the anime’s flaws don’t really take away from its masterful storytelling.

10 Way Too Many Characters Keep Popping Up

Granted that most anime tend to have a plethora of characters, but My Hero Academia takes the trope to another level. There are dozens of named students in UA Academy, all of whose backstories, powers, and emotional ranges have been fleshed out in intimate detail.

There are even more Pro-Heroes and Villains, well into the low hundreds when taken together. This creates diversity, but also makes it quite confusing for casual watchers to follow.

9 The Society Of Quirks Is No Different From One Without Any

It would be assumed that a society composed of mostly people with some Quirk or another would be drastically different from, say, the real world. However, there is no mention of special clothing, vehicles, or housing for heteromorphs — those with physical mutations that necessitate such changes.

Further, going by the fan theory that the story is set in the late 21st century, the technology in My Hero Academia doesn’t look any fancier than 2020 gadgetry.

8 Why Are Children Sent To Battle?

The rules of My Hero Academia skew heavily against the younger characters because nearly all of them who enter Hero programs are forced to fight villains far more powerful than they are.

These students are aware of the consequences, but are their teachers or parents? UA Academy simply decides to send them into battle, and while the kids aren’t exactly on the frontline, they are exposed to constant peril. Being powerful isn’t the only factor involved in becoming a hero; it doesn’t work without maturity.

7 Bakugo Is Just Over The Top Abusive

Children bully other children — this is not a surprising revelation to anyone, but the way Bakugo treats poor Midoriya reaches the point of abuse.

A few fans have voiced their dislike of this character for his aggressive behavior and lack of compassion, but his actions are by and large excused as being a natural part of adolescence. Bakugo isn’t a flaw in the anime per se, but his presence would be a lot more helpful if he could just calm down a little. Or a lot.

6 A Few Pro Hero Rankings Just Don’t Hold Up

The Hero Billboard Chart JP ranks the Pro-Heroes in Japan according to criteria such as overall power, solved cases, public perception, and so on. The Hero Public Safety Commission apparently involves complicated mathematics in coming up with their final rankings.

However, a few positions on the chart don’t make sense, for instance, Crust, the #6 Hero, perishes during the Paranormal Liberation War Arc, but Kamui Woods (#7) and Gang Orca (#12) almost effortlessly sail past their terrifying opponents. Kamui is also better-known than Crust, so there seem to be randomized factors mixed into the ranking formula.

5 There Are Quirks Whose Mechanics Make No Sense

Shoto Todoroki’s Quirk, Half-Hot Half-Cold, is a conflict in itself. Although he claims that he can empower each side of his body with the other, thereby cutting down recovery time to zero, that’s just not how heat flow works. On the other end of the bizarre scale is Principal Nezu, an intelligent dog.

How are there no other animals like him? Is he a heteromorphic human-canine hybrid? Then there are Quirks like Muscular’s Muscle Augmentation and Momo Yaoyorozu’s Creation that flat-out reject the Laws of Thermodynamics, but to be fair, some suspension of scientific disbelief is required when watching shonen anime.

4 Why Isn’t Mineta Changing His Behavior?

It’s expected for characters in a story to either show some semblance of growth or face repercussions for refusing to become better people. Mineta doesn’t act any differently than before, and given that he’s still one of the most perverted leches in anime history, he should pay the price for his actions.

Instead, Mineta is just laughed at or ignored by most of his class, with only a few of them making comments about his behavior. It’s not acceptable by most social standards.

3 The Main Villain’s Motivation Is Unclear

All For One is seemingly defeated by All Might in their final duel, after which he is transported to Tartarus, where the authorities attempt (and fail) to interrogate him. He is ultimately freed by a horde of Nomu and Tomura Shigaraki; All For One proceeds to deliver a soliloquy about how he will “become the greatest demon lord of all.”

He’s presumably speaking in metaphor, as there are no demons or lords in My Hero Academia, but what he means by that statement remains vague. This becomes tiresome for audiences as they have to keep second-guessing what All For One even wants.

2 Becoming A Hero Is Not The Only Way To Use One’s Quirk

Most children in the anime universe are excited to become a Pro-Hero and worked their hardest to pass the exams set by the various hero training centers in Japan. Those that fail are understandably dejected, but the story makes it seem like there is no other option for them.

To the contrary, people with healing Quirks can become doctors, those with energy Quirks could generate power, and those with destructive ones would actually find a place, paradoxically, in construction. Desperately wanting to be a hero may indirectly imply a need for attention.

1 The U.A. Entrance Exam Doesn’t Really Prove Anything

The Entrance Exam held by UA Academy is meant to measure each applicant’s hero “potential”, and it’s different each year apparently. When Deku & co. take part, the exam’s practical portion consists of a robot battle, which the attendees are told will be evaluated by awarding points based on a specific difficulty level.

What the future students are unaware of is the fact the examiners also score “rescue points,” which is how Deku manages to pass. On the other hand, so do Mineta, Koji, Kyoka, and Toru, none of whom display the strength required to accrue robot attack points.
