My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

One of the most beautiful and gripping aspects of My Hero Academia has to be the relationships between its characters, and how they develop as the series progresses. After all, the entirety of the series wouldn’t have been possible without the familial relationship that blossoms between the protagonist, Izuku, and the number-one hero he’s always looked up to, All Might.

All Might is a strong and stable figure – for the most part, anyway – that Izuku is able to lean on in times of hardship when he needs support. Not only that, but All Might is one of the best kinds of role models, as he always tries to make sure that Izuku is taking strides to be able to handle himself without his mentor. And while there’s been times Izuku has to fall back on All Might, there are just as many where he rises to the occasion and proves himself all on his own.

10 Needed Him: Izuku Desperately Needed Someone To Tell Him He Has What It Takes To Be A Hero

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

Ever since he was a small child, Izuku looks up to and wants to be just like the Pro Heroes. He eagerly awaits the day that his own unique Quirk awakens, but one fateful day in the doctor’s office confirms that he never will.

This breaks him, and he’s pushed to the breaking point even further by his mother, who simply apologizes and wishes things could be different instead of rooting for him regardless. Izuku desperately needs someone to tell him he can be a hero and place their belief in him, and All Might certainly provides this for him.

9 Didn’t Need: He Places First In The Sports Festival Preliminaries And Performs Impressively In The Tournament Fights

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

The Sports Festival is one of the first major events within the show that Izuku has to tackle without the help of All Might. He’s told to proudly announce to the world that he’s here to make a name for himself, but that’s all the outside advice he receives.

Despite this, he performs dazzlingly in the preliminaries, and manages to snag first place with a creative plan involving the landmine obstacles. He also breaks free of Shinso’s mind control and holds his own against Todoroki, who was trained from birth to be a star fighter.

8 Needed Him: All Might Saves Him From The Sludge Villain Back When He’s Still Quirkless

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

At the very start of the series, Bakugo bullies Izuku by stealing one of his hero journals and burning it to unrecognizable ashes. Not only that, but he tells Izuku of ‘a way he might gain a Quirk,’ and proceeds to tell him to take a swan dive off of the school’s roof, hoping to be born as a hero in the next life.

Izuku is understandably feeling down, and when he’s at his lowest point, he’s attacked by a sludge villain popping out of the sewers. All he can do is desperately claw for his life to no avail, and things would have been over for him right then and there if All Might hadn’t shown up.

7 Didn’t Need: He’s Able To Fight Off Muscular And Save Kota On His Own

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

One of the most standout fights of the third season of My Hero Academia has to be the altercation between Izuku and the villain Muscular. He corners Kota when the young boy runs off on his own, overcome by his grief, and Izuku shows up just in the nick of time to protect him.

It’s no easy task, though, as Izuku must break through the limitations of One For All that he’s been bound to and use more than one-hundred percent of his power to make sure Kota survives. Izuku moves Kota so much with this act that the latter is actually seen using his Quirk by choice for the first time.

6 Needed Him: All Might And The Other Teachers Come To The Students’ Aid During The U.S.J. Incident

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

The U.S.J. incident is an incredibly memorable one for fans of the series, as it’s the first time that it feels like the students’ lives are in palpable danger. They’re there to train, and All Might is absent due to having pushed himself past the limit of how much he can still use his powers.

Although he receives help from the other teachers after Iida is able to get to them and relay the situation, things wouldn’t have ended as well if All Might didn’t show up on the scene when he did. After all, he shows up just in time to save Izuku, Tsuyu and Mineta from a direct attack from Tomura and the Nomu.

5 Didn’t Need: He And Bakugo Are Able To Triumph Against All Might In The Final Exams

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

During the Final Exams arc, pairs of students are pitted against one of their teachers, who play the role of villain that the students must either capture or flee from. Izuku is paired up with Bakugo, the student least willing to work with him, and to make matters worse, he doesn’t seem interested in strategizing with or listening to Izuku even for this one test.

Miraculously, Izuku is able to get through to the other – not without directly punching him in the face first to knock sense into him – and they ultimately pass. Izuku even manages to subdue All Might with an overpowered smash, grab an unconscious Bakugo, and get both of them across the finish line.

4 Needed Him: All Might’s Support Is Vital For Revitalizing Izuku’s Mentality After The Sports Festival

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

After the Sports Festival, Izuku is hit with the heavy blow by Recovery Girl that she won’t be healing his serious injuries sustained by One For All anymore. At this point, he hasn’t learned any other method of handling his power, so a dejected Izuku admits to All Might that someone else would be better suited for his ability.

However, All Might doesn’t allow him to think this way for long, as even if others have more physical ability or raw talent than Izuku, the core reason why All Might chose him doesn’t change. Just like Izuku, All Might was Quirkless before being gifted One For All, and saw a younger version of himself in the boy.

3 Didn’t Need: He, Todoroki And Iida Are Able To Subdue The Hero Killer Without Pro Assistance

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

The series’ second season is incredibly eventful for many young aspiring Pro Heroes, but this is especially true for Izuku, Todoroki and Iida. The former two come to Iida’s assistance after his thirst for revenge leads him to track down – and almost have his life claimed by – the Hero Killer, Stain.

It’s an incredibly intense fight, and there are quite a few moments where it looks like the lives of everyone’s favorite students are in genuine danger. They manage to emerge victorious in one of the most memorable early villain fights of the series.

2 Needed Him: It’s Under All Might’s Guidance That He Chooses To Mentor Under Gran Torino

My Hero Academia 5 Times Deku Needed All Might (& 5 He Didnt)

One of the most beneficial periods of Izuku’s training is whenever he mentors under Gran Torino, who helps him think about and use One For All in an entirely new way. This is practically essential for the boy, as before this he’s unable to do so without harming himself, often to the point of becoming useless thereafter.

However, there’s a high likelihood that Izuku never would have taken up Gran Torino’s mentorship offer if All Might hadn’t suggested it to him. He placed incredibly high in the Sports Festival and had no idea that Gran Torino used to mentor All Might, and likely would’ve picked a less beneficial offer without his guidance.

1 Didn’t Need: He Breaks Out Of All Might’s Shadow And Develops A Unique Fighting Style On His Own

For the longest time, Izuku sees All Might as the absolute ideal that he has to strive to match up to. This inhibits him from coming up with uniquely creative uses of his own power, as he doesn’t quite see it as his own with this line of thinking.

He comes to realize that just because he’s the next One For All inheritor doesn’t mean that he has to do things the same way his predecessor does. He begins developing his own specialized fighting style that works better for him, a kick-based style instead of the punch-based one of All Might.
