Most memorable characters in My Hero Academia possess powerful Quirks that enable them to cause massive amounts of destruction or perform incredible, Olympian feats that continue to impress the most seasoned of anime lovers. But in a world where many characters are born Quirkless or with subpar Quirks, there are other characters that have figured out how to make their mark in other unique ways.

One such character is Melissa Shield, who played a prominent role in the first My Hero Academia movie, Two Heroes. While she might not be the strongest girl around, she’s definitely one of the smartest, and there are a few things every My Hero Academia fan should know about her in the off-chance that she makes an appearance in the actual series somewhere down the line.

10 How Old Is Melissa Shield?

Melissa Shield’s high level of maturity gave many viewers the impression that she was a bit older than the average freshman who is attending U.A High. That certainly seems to be the case.

Melissa Shield clocks in at 17 years of age. That means it looks as though she’s actually two years older than our protagonist and his classmates!

9 Who Is Her Father?

Melissa Shield is the daughter of Professor David Shield, who was not only All Might’s former sidekick during his time in America, but is currently a scientist who creates coveted support items for heroes.

He actually possesses a Quirk called Bendy Fingers, giving his fingers the flexibility needed to create hero costumes and support items with the utmost precision.

8 Why Does She Call All Might Her Uncle?

Given that David Shield and All Might are so close, it’s reasonable to assume that Melissa has interacted with All Might in person a few times prior to Two Heroes, despite the two living on completely different landmasses.

She called him “Uncle Might,” which only proves just how close she’s been able to get to the world’s greatest hero, which makes perfect sense since her father played such a prominent role in All Might’s hero career.

7 Where Does She Live?

Melissa is an inhabitant of I-Island, the artificial moving island home to thousands of scientists just like her father, who are conducting research on Quirks and inventing tools to help heroes better utilize their own abilities.

While the movie didn’t explore Melissa’s personal past, she was most likely born and raised here, which has enabled her to absorb so much knowledge given that she’s constantly surrounded by geniuses.

6 Does She Have A Quirk?

While her father has a Quirk, Melissa was one of those poor unfortunate souls in My Hero Academia’s universe that was born Quirkless.

Still, given that her father’s Quirk was so underwhelming, any Quirk she could’ve been born with probably wouldn’t have been anything to write home about.

5 Is She In School?

While Melissa wouldn’t be able to attend a school like U.A High given her absence of a Quirk (or physical aptitude), she’s actually a third-year student at I-Island Academy, an institution that focuses on training students to become the scientists of the future.

As a third-year, she’s been given her own private laboratory, which has enabled her to store many of her inventions and research in a safe, quiet space.

4 Who/Where Is Her Mother?

Throughout the entirety of My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, Melissa’s mother is never named. Her whereabouts are unknown as well, though it’s safe to assume that she isn’t on I-Island. Given the fact that Melissa was born Quirkless, her mother probably lacked a Quirk as well.

Hopefully, Melissa makes an appearance in the main series, where she just might bump into her mother while strolling the outside of I-Island.

3 Does Melissa Know The Truth About One For All?

Despite closely observing All Might and having full knowledge of his powers, it seems like Melissa hasn’t drawn the link between Midoriya and All Might’s relationship. Though she acknowledged that Midoriya and All Might have a similar Quirk, given the fact that she gave Midoriya the Full Gauntlet, which was meant for All Might, she failed to realize that they shared an identical Quirk.

By the end of the film, she doesn’t even really see All Might’s true form, meaning that she has no knowledge of his condition and the fact that he gave Midoriya One For All to prevent the power from ending with him. Still, as smart as she is, it’s only a matter of time until she comes to an accurate conclusion regarding Midoriya and All Might and the bond of One For All that links them.

2 Has She Appeared In The Main Series?

Melissa Shield’s only appearance in the main series comes in the special episode entitled “Save the World with Love.” After a few students of Class 1-A fail a special short class in this Season 3 episode, All Might receives an email from Melissa Shield. She invites him to I-Expo on I-Island to reunite with David Shield after several years of the two not seeing one another.

As fans are treated to the email read in Melissa’s voice, she’s seen walking around I-Island, giving fans just a glimpse of what is to be expected in Two Heroes.

1 What Inventions Has She Actually Made?

When Melissa shows her lab to Midoriya, she enters a space where her inventions are stored, and yet the only one that fans are allowed to see is the Full Gauntlet, an arm brace that she made after observing All Might that, when worn by Midoriya, enables him to utilize a 100% Detroit Smash without any injury to himself.

While this support item did crumble away during the final moments of the film, it’s likely that Melissa could create an improved Full Gauntlet able to withstand more full-powered Detroit Smashes sometime in the near future.
