It’s no secret that My Hero Academia takes a great deal of inspiration from Naruto. More than just taking inspiration though, My Hero Academia’s latest arc takes Naruto’s most famous battle and flips it completely on its head for the better.

No moment in Naruto is more famous than the titular protagonist’s first battle with his rival Sasuke. Sasuke’s primary motivation throughout the series is to exact revenge on those responsible for assassinating his family. Though Sasuke is initially a hero, his need for revenge makes him seek out increasingly dangerous sources of power, eventually bringing him straight into the clutches of the villainous Orochimaru. This leads directly to his fateful confrontation with Naruto. More than just an epic brawl between two skilled fighters, the fight reveals Sasuke and Naruto’s conflicting worldview. Naruto finds comfort and companionship among his fellow ninjas, whereas Sasuke feels the need to solve his problems all by himself. Inevitably, Sasuke barely wins the fight, a loss that Naruto carries within him throughout Naruto Shippuden.

In contrast to all this is the latest arc of My Hero Academia. After the disastrous events of the Paranormal Liberation War arc, Deku learns that the series’ main villain, All for One, has been after him the whole time. As a result, Deku completely abandons his friends and comrades in U.A. High to protect them from All for One. Deku comes to believe that only he can stop the villain, leading him to become increasingly reckless. Furthering his downward spiral is his battle with Lady Nagant. Though Deku wins her over, his spirits are crushed after she’s nearly killed in an explosion pre-planned by All for One. Things come to a head when Deku is rescued from the villain Dictator by his classmates. Far from a touching reunion though, this leads to an all-out brawl. Even all of Class 1-A aren’t enough to stop Deku though. As grim as the situation seems, readers finally see a glimpse of hope when the combined efforts of Class 1-A propel Tenya Ida to catch up with Deku. As Ida extends a hand and reminds Deku of what it means to be a hero, Deku can’t help but burst out into tears.

Initially, the two situations appear to have more than a few similarities. Both Sasuke and Deku go out on their own because of a problem that they feel they must face alone. Deku’s intentions might have been far nobler than Sasukes’s, as Deku really did believe he was protecting his friends, but the result is the same. This last arc has seen Deku go down an incredibly dark path as evidenced by his tattered costume and more menacing approach. Inevitably though, Deku’s heel turn has a completely different outcome from Sasuke’s and that’s for one reason; all of his friends showed up, not just one.

Though Naruto makes the argument that Sasuke doesn’t need to stand alone and that there are people in his life who care deeply about him, the argument falls flat because Naruto is the only one who actually shows up. Certainly, there were other ninjas who joined Naruto in his quest to retrieve Sasuke, but none of those were people who had a deep connection to him. In contrast, learning to accept the help of others isn’t just something that Deku needs to learn, it’s something that’s shown to him. Only by working together and helping each other is Class 1-A able to break through to Deku and prove to him that he’s not alone. My Hero Academia’s moment is stronger because it shows that there is strength in community and teamwork, as opposed to Naruto which only says it.
