My Hero Academia Redeems Americas Top Hero At The Worst Moment

Warning! Spoilers ahead for My Hero Academia chapter 332!

Almost nothing about My Hero Academia’s top American hero Star and Stripe was redeemable until a last-minute decision actually put her in a positive light for the first time since her debut. But this vindication most likely comes at the expense of her winning against All For One – and her life.

Out of her many failings, Star and Stripe’s most pertinent sin involves how she treats the pilots of a jet that she uses as a platform in lieu of flying. She might possess a powerful and terrifying New Order quirk, but she isn’t blessed with the gift of flight. Because All For One’s stolen Airwalk quirk allows him to fly even though he’s currently riding a winged Nomu, Star and Stripe must rely on her comrades piloting the jet beneath her feet for transportation.

Star and Stripe has articulated some very disparaging comments to her fellow brothers in arms since their introduction and she essentially uses them as pawns to further her own agenda. But in chapter 332 when All For One is heading at full speed towards a weakened Star and Stripe, her pilots actually recommend she ram their jet into the oncoming villain to bring him down. But Star and Stripe freezes, and because she’s unable to sacrifice her comrades, All For One is now in a position of power. The chapter ends with the villain literally holding Star and Stripe’s head in the palm of his hand. And based on past comments, it’s clear that All For One plans on stealing her New Order quirk to use against the heroes of Japan – and then the world.

Star and Stripe’s change of heart is particularly surprising as the pilots recently recall her telling them, “Starting today, you boys are under my wing! When we die, we die together, brothers!” While this is an expected mindset for soldiers to have for each other, the relationship between Star and Stripe and her pilots isn’t particularly equal. And this inequality isn’t comparable to a contrast in rank. Star and Stripe is a hero with incredible powers while they are not. Even though most of the population in this world are gifted with a quirk, many of the abilities people possess aren’t conducive to fighting, let alone surviving against supervillains. And yet, she’s essentially using her pilots as pawns to help her fight battles they wouldn’t have normally been tasked with engaging because it would be akin to suicide. This relationship in turn taints otherwise respectful sentiments she makes to them, such as this gem: “I’ll make sure your remains make it back to your loved ones!” She’s the hero. Her number-one priority should be ensuring their survival, not winning at their expense.

Ever since mangaka Kohei Horikoshi introduced her, he has portrayed Star and Stripe as a selfish and horribly shallow hero at every possibility. She basically created her entire heroic persona as a sort of middle finger to All Might even though he inspired her to become a hero. She even ordered the firing of American missiles in Japanese airspace without permission from Japan to defeat All For One. As such, readers really haven’t care whether or not she loses, except for the fact that All For One would most likely acquire her deadly quirk as a result. Now, her unwillingness to sacrifice her brothers in arms adds some humanity to her character at a time when she might die. What’s worse, in the same chapter, My Hero Academia revealed a flashback to a time when Star and Stripe hadn’t yet unlocked the true power of New Order, a failure that subjected her to ridicule and sexism. Now, there’s a part of readers who want her to succeed to give those chauvinistic pigs what for. But that probably won’t happen.
