My Hero Academias Koichi Has Learned All Mights Favorite Technique

If there’s one trait that most heroes in My Hero Academia share, it’s an incredible appreciation of All Might. As the long-time number one hero, All Might has been responsible for many of them choosing the path of a hero, and that goes beyond just the students at U.A. and the other hero schools across the country. While many will try to imitate his style and flair, few of them are able to imitate his sheer power, or other aspects of his quirk, but Koichi of the My Hero Academia Vigilantes spinoff manga has found one way to do just that.

Aside from his incredible strength and muscular form, All Might wasn’t able to draw much on the other abilities hidden within One for All the way Midoriya has. He did have at least one additional ability, however, that wasn’t simply sheer strength, and that was his classic Superman-style of travel by jumping in place of flight. As he traverses Japan from incident to incident, All Might has been shown leaping tremendous distances, with a few scenes in Vigilantes depicting him jumping from Tokyo to Osaka—about 250 miles. It seems likely that he was at least subconsciously accessing the quirk of his mentor and previous holder of One for All, Nana Shimura, to accomplish this. Her ability, which Midoriya has been shown using, allows the user to float through the air, something that would certainly come in handy when trying to travel extreme distances.

As Koichi has continued to develop his quirk, which has turned out to be a far more powerful quirk than he initially believed, he slowly became able to make “double jumps” like a video game character, allowing him to traverse land even more quickly than before. He had been convinced that two jumps was his limit, but in the latest chapter of Vigilantes, chapter 101, Koichi is so concentrated on his goal that he doesn’t even realize just how many jumps he’s done in a row without touching the ground. In effect, he’s jumping through Naruhata in much the same way All Might does.

Like Midoriya and so many others, Koichi very much looks up to All Might, and his vigilante costume consists primarily of officially licensed All Might hoodies that he’s collected, most of which are designed to resemble the costumes of All Might’s past. He’s taken a lot of his values and approach to crimefighting from All Might as well, and that’s one of the reasons that heroes like Eraserhead have been willing to look the other way towards his illegal vigilante actions in the past. To be able to emulate one of All Might’s favorite techniques is undoubtedly a major moment for him, even if he’s a bit too distracted to fully appreciate that fact in the moment.

Koichi’s desire to fly has been a consistent trait since the early chapters of Vigilantes, where he recklessly leapt off a building in hopes of saving fellow vigilante Pop Step. It was even shown that as a baby, his quirk did allow him to hover, a fact which his stressed-out mother didn’t appreciate and actively discouraged to the point that he never knew he had that ability. To have come so far that he can now emulate at least one of All Might’s abilities is a testament to how much Koichi has grown and had his character change over the run of the series, and it’s a well-earned moment for fans who’ve been reading from the beginning. It’s also a mark of the quality of writing that My Hero Academia Vigilantes gets from Hideyuki Furuhashi, turning what might otherwise have been a forgettable spinoff into an excellent manga of its own.
