Namor In Black Panther 2 Would Complete The MCUs Defenders

Namor joining Black Panther: Wakanda Forever gives Marvel the last character it needs to make a proper version of The Defenders in the MCU. According to an unconfirmed report, Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta will be playing the Avenging Son from Marvel Comics in the upcoming Black Panther sequel. If true, that would be huge news. As a character who predates even Captain America himself, Namor the Sub-Mariner is perhaps the biggest Marvel hero who has never been adapted in live-action before.

That could finally change if he and the underwater kingdom of Atlantis appear in Black Panther 2 as enemies of Wakanda. In the comics, Namor is a powerful force strong enough to more than hold his own against foes like Thor or Hulk, so he’s sure to be a more than worthy opponent for the movie’s heroes. Considering how important he is to the comics, there’s a good chance that Black Panther 2’s ending will leave the door open for him to return in future MCU projects.

Like his comic counterpart, the MCU’s Namor could transition from villain to hero. In fact, he could be a member of the MCU’s Defenders. Despite what’s been said about Charlie Cox supposedly reprising his Daredevil role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it’s unlikely that Marvel will use the team from the Netflix show. Instead, it may reinvent the Defenders concept with the classic team from the 1970s and 1980s comics. If so, the groundwork needed to build them may be done when Black Panther 2 adds Namor to the MCU’s already massive lineup of superheroes.

Before the Namor casting news, the MCU already had three of the team’s core characters: Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). The Sub-Mariner co-founded The Defenders with Strange and Hulk in 1971, with Valkyrie joining up in 1973 to become a mainstay who outlasted all the rest. These three (plus Namor) headlined Marvel’s Defenders comic for years. Of course, they’re far from the only characters associated with the classic team, but they are the ones that would be most important to a Defenders movie. There’s also Silver Surfer, but he only stuck around a few issues and has returned on an occasional basis. The most noteworthy Defender aside from Namor, Valkyrie, Strange, and Hulk is the Batman-inspired Nighthawk, but he doesn’t necessarily have to be a part of the MCU’s initial Defenders roster.

Similar to what happened with his arc in the comics, he could join up in a sequel. Assuming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever lets Namor live, he could return to form the Defenders with Hulk, Strange, and Valkyrie, either in a dedicated Defenders film or Doctor Strange 3. In the comics, they exist as a “non-team” that only come together when the need arises. They’re much smaller than the Avengers but have just as much raw power. Rather than attempt to rebuild the Avengers, it could be this is the superhero team Marvel will lean on in Phase 5 of the MCU.
