Naomi Watts gained attention with her role in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and has carved her way through Hollywood since. She followed up that role with her role as Rachel Keller in the Ring remake. Naomi has also received several Best Actress nominations – one for her portrayal of Cristina Peck in 21 Grams and one for her role of Maria Bennet in the 2012 disaster flick The Impossible. Now she will be portraying Rose Mary Walls in The Glass Castle.

Screen Rant got a chance to talk with Naomi Watts on press day, where we discussed what was the biggest challenge bringing Rose Mary to life, what scenes from the book had made it in the movie, and what she could tell us about her role as Janey-E Jones on the Twin Peaks revival.

What was the biggest challenge of bringing Rose Mary to life? I mean, obviously she is alive…

Naomi Watts: Yeah, she’s a real life person. Yeah. Honoring her story. I think Jeannette wrote her memoir based on these fantastic events, be them sometimes negative and sometimes incredibly positive, but she wrote from her heart with love and forgiveness and acknowledging that these things impacted her life greatly and created who she was. But sometimes I felt the audience, I mean, the readers, were quite judgmental towards Rose Mary in terms of looking at the research and the interviews and things where people talked about this character. They maybe just misunderstood her, so I was hoping that I could bring some empathy to her and, yeah, she made some different choices in the ways she parented. I felt there was lots of great things that she did and it was important for the audience to understand that.

Sure. One thing about Rose Mary and Rex retrospectively they are both really bold thinkers. I mean for all of their shortcomings, they had huge aspirations and dreams. Did you read the book at all?

Naomi Watts: Yeah.

Was there any particular story in the book that didn’t necessarily make it to the screen that you wanted to see personally?

Naomi Watts: There are quite a few. Yeah. I mean, there was the one about the cheetah. There was also the one about Rose Mary, which we did actually film but didn’t make it into the film, which was her eating, sneaking chocolate and not sharing it with her children when they were pretty much starving. So that’s a, that was a pretty outrageous moment and, for whatever reason, it didn’t work in this version of the film, but yeah some poor choices were made but, also as you said, they were both bold thinkers. They both instilled important values in their kids and hope and I think they achieved a lot. Rose Mary’s dedication to her creativity must have impacted Jeannette and to believe in yourself and who cares if other people judge you. Just be who you are and that is an important thing I suppose. Today especially.

Switching gears for a second, my favorite show on television is Twin Peaks and I watched everything and caught up.

Naomi Watts: Oh, good. So you’re excited to go home tonight.

I can’t wait. You have no idea! When is Janey-E going to meet actual Agent Dale Cooper? I’m just waiting for this moment.

Naomi Watts: Where I’m not at liberty to say anything. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

I love it. I’m really curious to see where all the characters go. It’s amazing. An amazing piece of work. Because David Lynch, another bold thinker, that guy is on a level.

Naomi Watts: He’s such a unique thinker. There is no one like him. He’s just so fun to be around that I was just so excited when he called and said come play.
