There are lots of unpopular opinions about Narcos on Reddit, from the lack of adoration for fan-favorite characters to the production itself.

It’s been a great ride for Narcos so far, with both the Colombian and Mexican installments being highly praised for their twists, set designs, fascinating characters, and fluid storytelling. Thanks to its many moving parts, the show has been dissected heavily on all social platforms, and even better on Reddit.

The drug trade saga has been heralded by fans, with many being content with how everything was set up. However, a few have derided it, pointing out a thing or two that they hate. Some of the unpopular opinions and ideas make sense while the majority would definitely ruin things if they were implemented.

There’s Too Much Narration

Redditor omghamster doesn’t like the fact that most of the events are narrated. According to them, it spoils the fun. “I couldn’t get through it. Too much narration,” they say.

Since the narration is done in English, it’s usually a welcome break from the subtitles for non-Spanish speakers. The narration not only helps in adding emphasis but also makes the show easy to digest, hence eliminating the need for a rewatch. Award-winning productions such as Goodfellas and You have also used narrators to good effect.

Only The First Two Episodes Of The Colombia Seasons Are Captivating

A claim guaranteed to not be received well is held by WillyWasASheepDog who believes that only the first few episodes are good. They give a rather interesting recollection of their viewing experience, saying, “I fell asleep during the third one. Got so bored through the fourth I just gave up on it.”

The first two episodes are actually tame as they basically tell the tale of Escobar’s rise from an ordinary bandit who focussed on selling counterfeit electronics to a drug manufacturer. From there on, things get more explosive. It’s thus surprising that the Redditor enjoyed Escobar as the electronics seller and couldn’t stick around for the drug-dealing Escobar that shot and bombed his way to crime glory.

The General Casting Is Bad

Redditor Poise 5644 is bothered by the fact that most of the actors don’t look like the real-life people they portray. They claim, “Pablo Escobar was chubby while Wagner is skinny. Even in Mexico, Benjamin Arellano looks nothing like he does in real life.”

Actors on TV shows and movies have never been expected to be doppelgangers of the real-life people they portray. So long as there is some little resemblance, viewers are normally okay with the difference in looks. What matters more is that the performances are brilliant and the story is solid enough.

The Cali And Guadalajara Stories Are Better Than The Medellin Ones

There’s a high number of people that abandoned the show after Escobar’s story ended but muneer_97 feels that season3 (which focuses on the Carli Cartel) and Narcos: Mexico are the better offerings. They have a decent argument, claiming, “Most of us already knew the outcome of Pablo’s story but we never really heard much about how the Cali Cartel rose and how they operated.”

Escobar is indeed the most infamous drug lord of all time and the most dangerous character in Narcos, so most people are familiar with his story. However, it’s the subplots that matter, and those are brought out quite brilliantly on the show. The Pablo seasons might not be superior in terms of character development and story arcs but they were extremely entertaining. Fans enjoyed them more given the person they focussed on.

David Isn’t That Terrible

Miguel Rodríguez Orejuela’s son, David, is portrayed as the most annoying member of the Carli Cartel but DoubleDual63 doesn’t share that opinion. “He is both intuitively and technically observant,” they say, given the way the character notices DEA cameras in unusual places, among other little details.

It’s hard to root for a character that’s totally okay with discharging toxic chlorine gas on civilians. David is not only cruel but also extremely jealous of fellow cartel members, making him clash with them regularly. His moments of brilliance are very few for him to be considered. The Redditor attempts to point out David’s intelligence but the secondary antagonist is killed quite easily, which makes fans doubt if he is indeed smart or cautious at all.

The Subtitles Are Annoying

Unlike other Netflix foreign-language shows, Narcos is subbed but not dubbed, something that irritates some viewers. GeauxRecovery was hoping for a time when the dialogue would turn to strictly English but that didn’t happen. They wrote: “I am 2 episodes in and I find the number of subtitles ruining things.”

Subtitles do make viewers feel like they are doing extra work but they are necessary for historically accurate shows like this. Making real-life South American drug lords speak English is something that would not only not be well received by natives of the countries but also feel unrealistic to the English-speaking viewer.

Pablo Escobar Is The Worst Character

According to Redditor ccurrtis189, Escobar is hardly intriguing. They state, “The other gangsters have an ‘affably evil’ mobster type of vibe to them whereas Pablo just comes across as an unsophisticated thug.”

The Redditor’s argument can be quickly disapproved by the fact that actor Wagner Moura was nominated for a Golden Globe, amongst other minor awards, for his portrayal of Pablo Escobar. No other actor on the show has been nominated for a major award. As the main character, Escobar has way more memorable scenes too, and the dozens of memes about him from the show are proof of his popularity. Suggesting that even some of the best henchmen in Narcos are better than Escobar is guaranteed to anger many fans.

Murphy And Pena Don’t Have Chemistry

Redditor HeroJugernaut thinks Murphy and Pena are unimpressive as DEA partners. They write, “Near the end, I would say they both turned into antagonists. They also didn’t have good chemistry together.”

It’s a surprising opinion since, for most of the first two seasons, the two DEA agents blend so well that they almost turn the show into a buddy cop drama. Pena is more of a daredevil while Murphy is laid back but that’s what makes these sorts of partnerships work so well. As for the claim that they became antagonists, only Pena can plead guilty since he was okay with the killing of one of Escobar’s child soldiers.

Narcos: Mexico Should Have Had A Different Theme Song

The Narcos theme song, Tuyo by Rodrigo Amante, is part of what makes the crime drama so enjoyable. Though the song was composed to fit with the Colombian style of music, it’s still used in Narcos: Mexico. Redditor rndmlgnd isn’t happy about this, stating, “I was thinking we might get a badass Mexican song.”

Given how popular the original theme song was, it was a wise idea for the producers to keep it on the Mexican spinoff. A Mexican theme song had been teased in the first trailer but it was never used, presumably due to fan backlash on the comments. Among the Narcos facts only real fans know is that Tuyo is a love song that can be dedicated to anyone on adores. For this reason, none of the lyrics contradict the events of the spinoff.

Félix Is A Good Guy

Some fans strongly believe that Guadalajara cartel boss Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, who is also the main character in the first two seasons of Narcos: Mexico, is a good guy. Redditor Ashley346363 simply writes, “Felix is a good guy. The villains introduced themselves in the finale.”

While it’s true that Amado Carillo Fuentes and his cronies revealed themselves as the true backstabbers at the end of the second season, Felix cannot be labeled a saint. Inside his bucket of many sins is the murder of star DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. He is also responsible for one of the most brutal murders in Narcos, where he bludgeons Nava with a cigarette tray. The good thing Felix has going for him is his calm demeanor, something that normally masks the evil inside of him.
