Naruto has seen no shortage of excellent teachers over the course of its run, but today we’re examining the best of them.

Naruto follows the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a ninja who aims to become the strongest shinobi of his village, the Hokage. Throughout the series, we’ve seen the rise of many shinobi and behind all of them were some great teachers.

Right from the very beginning of a child’s journey towards being a ninja, they’re put under the care of some incredible teachers at the Academy, and as they progress, they work under the likes of Jonin leaders, while some work directly under Kage as well. In a plethora of some of the most talented teachers in Naruto, we’ve picked those who are undeniably best at this job.

15 Might Guy

Might Guy’s role, especially in the anime, was often played for comedic relief, but there’s no denying that his methods were effective.

He had a knack for fostering enthusiasm in students, especially in Rock Lee. Tenten and Neji Hyuga might not have been as excitable as Lee, but they flourished under Might Guy’s teachings all the same. He encouraged his students to treat even the most mundane in life as training opportunities. He encouraged healthy competition amongst them as well, reminding them that there is always more to reach for as a shinobi.

14 Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto was never actually a teacher during the series. Instead, that mostly occurred in the years between Naruto Shippuden and Boruto. Fans could see a bit of the teacher he would become, however, in some of his interactions with Konohamaru Sarutobi.

Despite his own experience with complicated techniques as a teen, Naruto was still able to teach Konohamaru a handful of techniques he never would have learned in school. He also managed to teach him how to use the Rasengan shortly after learning it himself. He would have become an excellent teacher.

13 Kurenai Yuhi

According to the anime, Kurenai had a very select specialty: genjutsu. None of her students that the audience saw specialized in it, meaning that her best skill went unused as a teacher.

It would have been all the more difficult, then, for her to teach students who specialized in working with insects, ninja dogs, and the Byakugan. She had to vary her techniques to be able to work with them. Kurenai also did something no other sensei did: she believed in Hinata Hyuga. When her father decided Hinata was worthless as a shinobi, Kurenai took her under her wing and helped her break out of her shell.

12 Iruka Umino

Iruka didn’t get to see a lot of action in the series, but he played a major role in Naruto’s formative years. Like Kurenai’s belief in Hinata, he was the first sensei to truly believe in Naruto Uzumaki.

Iruka had a big heart, and his empathy is what made him able to teach Naruto at all. He blamed Naruto, as an extension of the monster inside of him, for the death of his own parents years earlier. He worked through his own preconceived notions to set Naruto on the path to become a great shinobi and eventually became the headmaster of the school, doing the same for future generations of shinobi.

11 Asuma Sarutobi

He might not have had as much time with his students as most of the other teachers in the Naruto series, but Asuma Sarutobi left a big impression. For starters, he managed to make Ino care about more than just her appearance and made Choji look forward to more than just barbecue.

Asuma also found unique ways to analyze the talents of his students, understanding their aptitude thanks to playing games with them. His biggest success story was Shikamaru Nara, who became the smartest strategist in the entire shinobi world after not having any ambition in life at all.

10 Jiraiya

Jiraiya was one of the Legendary Sannin of Konohagakure and it goes without saying that he was an exceptional shinobi. In a fight, few could even hope to match him, let alone beat him. Unsurprisingly, Jiraiya was just as great a teacher as he was a ninja.

Over the course of the series, the Sannin had trained some of the brightest of minds, such as the likes of the Amegakure orphans, which included Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko. Other than the Ame Orphans, Jiraiya also trained Naruto Uzumaki into an exceptional shinobi, who went on to become the Seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village.

9 Orochimaru

Just like Jiraiya, Orochimaru was one of the Legendary Sannin as well, and arguably more skilled when it came to teaching students. From his time in Konoha to the time that he spent rogue in the Hidden Sound, Orochimaru raised a lot of incredibly talented ninjas who all went on to become powerful.

Anko Mitarashi was one of the strongest of his students, as were the members of the Sound Five. Orochimaru also trained Sasuke Uchiha for over two years, and thanks to his training, Sasuke grew enormously when it came to power. It goes without saying that Orochimaru will continue to raise such students in Boruto as well.

8 Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi Hatake was the Jonin leader of Konoha’s Team 7 who went on to become the Sixth Hokage after the Fourth Great Ninja War concluded. Being an exceptional student himself, Kakashi did an incredible job of raising others like him.

In Naruto, he trained Sasuke to the point where he could match and even overwhelm Gaara in a fight, while in Naruto: Shippuden, Kakashi was seen training Naruto Uzumaki to master the Rasenshuriken using some of the most iconic ideas. Kakashi has also done his part in raising the generation after him by setting an example as the Sixth Hokage of the village.

7 Tsunade Senju

Konoha’s Fifth Hokage and one of the Legendary Sannin, just like Orochimaru and Jiraiya, Tsunade Senju was just as good a teacher as she was a Kage. Towards the end of the Naruto series, she was seen training Sakura Haruno and it goes without saying that she did an amazing job at raising her.

Thanks to the training in medical ninjutsu that Tsunade provided, Sakura Haruno grows up to the greatest medical ninja in the entire series. Tsunade also trained others, such as Shizune and Ino Yamanaka to a certain extent, but her best student has been Sakura Haruno, hands down.

6 Hashirama Senju

Hashirama Senju was the First Hokage of Konoha and one of its creators, along with Madara Uchiha. As the guy who created the village, Hashirama was very keen on passing on the legacy, which is why he trained everyone who he deemed fit to inherit the Will of Fire. One of his greatest students has to be Hiruzen Sarutobi, who later went on to become the Third Hokage of the Konoha Village in the First Great Ninja War.

Thanks to Hashirama’s training, Hiruzen grew up to be the greatest Hokage in the series, other than Naruto Uzumaki, and not only did he rule with power, but he inspired love as well.

5 Tobirama Senju

Konoha’s Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju was a battle-hardened shinobi who had seen both war and peace, and hence realized that to protect the peace, the power and knowledge needed to be passed on. As such, Tobirama Senju raised a number of great shinobi ranging from Hiruzen Sarutobi to Homura Mitokado and even Koharu Utatane.

Tobirama essentially lay the foundation for Konoha by building the Academy, and even the Konoha Police Force. Undoubtedly, he was one of the greatest Hokage, and a fabulous teacher as well.

4 Lightning Ay

Kumogakure’s Fourth Raikage, Lightning Ay was an exceptionally powerful shinobi back in his time. Along with Minato Namikaze, he was renowned as one of the fastest shinobi of his time. Although Ay appeared to be very stern at the face, he loved all his students whether it be his brother, Killer Bee, or his right-hand man, Darui.

Ay managed to raise them into extraordinary shinobi, as Bee mastered the power of Gyuki completely, while Darui went on to become the Fifth Raikage of the village after Ay himself.

3 Hiruzen Sarutobi

Quite possibly the greatest teacher in the entire Naruto series, Hiruzen Sarutobi was Konohagakure’s Third Hokage. Being inspired by both Hashirama’s loving philosophy and Tobirama’s stern nature, Hiruzen led the village in the best way possible. As a teacher, he raised some of the most powerful shinobi in Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and even Tsunade Senju.

However, that’s not the extent of the people that he trained. As the Hokage, Hiruzen inspired an entire generation of shinobi to embrace the Will of Fire, including Naruto Uzumaki as well.

2 Minato Namikaze

Minato Namikaze was Konohagakure’s Fourth Hokage. Being one of Jiraiya’s students, Minato was raised into an incredible shinobi over the years. At a very young age, he inherited a squad that included Obito Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, and Rin Nohara. Evidently, he did a fantastic job of raising each of them as they played a significant role in the wars to come.

Although Obito did stray from his path, he was saved by his teacher, which affected the result of the Fourth Great Ninja War massively. Kakashi turned out to be just as great as any other Hokage, while Rin became a fine ninja as well.

1 Hagoromo Otsutsuki

Hagoromo Otsutsuki, also known as The Sage of Six Paths, was quite possibly the strongest being in the entire Naruto series. Revered as a God, Hagoromo was the person who spread the idea of unity through chakra, also known as Ninshu.

He raised Indra Otsutsuki, and Ashura Otsutsuki, his children, into tremendously powerful people. Despite all that, his biggest gift was the idea of peace and unity that he spread in the world. For that, he goes down in history as one of the best, if not the best, teachers.
