Nathan Fillions Two Big Mouth Characters Explained

Nathan Fillion is one of many recurring celebrity cast members on Big Mouth but which two characters has he voiced? Adult-oriented Netflix animation Big Mouth follows a group of seventh-graders including Nick (Nick Kroll) and Andrew (John Mulaney) as they navigate the trials and tribulations of puberty with the help – and sometimes hindrance – of shoulder angels called hormone monsters and hormone monstresses. The series was co-created by Kroll and his real-life best friend Andrew Goldberg and is inspired by their own experiences growing up in the suburbs of New York’s Westchester County where Big Mouth is set.

The Big Mouth cast boasts tons of big names appearing in one-off or recurring roles. The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis, for example, voices a chipper toad known as the Gratitoad while The Good Place star Kristen Bell provides the voice of Pam – a pillow Nick and Andrew’s friend Jay (Jason Mantzoukas) has fashioned into a makeshift sex toy. Other Big Mouth celebrity cameos include actor Craig Robinson who voiced one of Nick’s pubic hairs and Westworld’s Thandie Newton as Mona – a hormone monstress who latches on to Nick and Andrew’s classmate Missy (Jenny Slate/Ayo Edebiri).

The Rookie star Nathan Fillion is another Big Mouth recurring cast member and was invited to join after having previously worked with Nick Kroll on his sketch series Kroll Show. Fillion has so far voiced two characters and made his Big Mouth debut in the season 1 episode “Sleepover: A Harrowing Ordeal Of Emotional Brutality.” The episode sees resident geek Missy attend a sleepover held by classmate Jessi (Jessi Klein) where she gets a serious sugar rush after chugging a six-pack of Coke and confesses Nathan Fillion is her celebrity crush. Uninhibited and slightly manic from imbibing so much sugar, Missy details an elaborate fantasy in which she and Nathan Fillion (voicing himself) fall in love and “solve crimes like Castle, but the crimes are in space like Firefly.” She gets a tad carried away in her daydream and hallucinates that Jessi’s pet dog (also voiced by Fillion) is her crush and starts making out with him.

While Fillion has only appeared once in Big Mouth as Jessi’s dog, he has voiced himself in six more episodes, mostly appearing in Missy’s daydreams. One particularly hilarious season 3 episode titled “Obsessed” introduced Missy’s erotic crossover fanfiction which details Fillion’s steamy love affair with Gustavo. This is a character from her favorite racy novel The Rock Of Gibraltar who turned himself into a horse to be with his one true love.

Unfortunately, Big Mouth season 4 didn’t feature a cameo from Nathan Fillion. However, Netflix has already renewed the animation through to a sixth season so it’s possible fans will be seeing more of Nathan Fillion in Big Mouth in the not-too-distant future.
