NBC Peacocks 3 Plans Explained Free vs Premium vs Premium Plus

NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, is available for consumers, with three different subscription plans to choose from. Comcast officially joins the competitive streaming war with its own platform, which promises a mix of old and new TV shows and movies. What sets it apart from its competition is that it offers users more options with regard to their subscription preferences.

Announced in 2019, the service exclusively houses iconic TV shows from NBC such as The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Frasier, effectively taking them out of other platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video. Meanwhile, it also features ongoing programs such as The Blacklist, Law and Order: SVU; This Is Us; Dateline; and Late Night with Seth Meyers among others. Peacock also offers a string of original content already available on the platform like Brave New World; The Capture; Psych 2: Lassie Come Home; and Curious George. Over time, it’ll roll out more original conten, including the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

To further entice potential patrons, Peacock also has a wide range of films such as Shrek; Do The Right Thing; Jurassic Park; and The Matrix Trilogy. In a competitive industry, however, while other services debuted with their banner projects, NBCUniversal focused on highlighting Peacock’s three-tier subscription program – including one that’s free. Here’s what you need to know about each of them.

Peacock Free

Peacock’s basic version ultimately sets it apart from its competitors because it’s free, but it comes with its own caveats. To offset the subscription cost, Peacock’s free version includes ads. The platform says it’ll be limited to five minutes or less per hour, so it’s almost as if one’s watching traditional TV. In terms of content, users have access to more or less 13,000 hours of content, which is around two-thirds of Peacock’s whole library. This is, however, composed of the most popular shows and films such as Parks and Recreation and The Matrix Trilogy. There is a one-week wait for the latest episodes of ongoing shows to be accessible and only a couple of episodes of original programming will be available.

Peacock Premium

For those who are willing to spend money on Peacock but with a limited budget, there’s Peacock Premium. It costs $4.99 per month or $50 per year and gives fans full access to the platform’s library – including its original content. Compared to the free version, this option allows subscribers to access 20,000 hours’ worth of content. Meanwhile, there’s a significantly shorter wait to watch the latest episodes of ongoing shows as they will be available the day after. Peacock Premium will still have some ads, however – in fact, it’ll be the same number of ads in its free counterpart. The fee is more likely for wider access to the platform’s range of content.

Peacock Premium Plus

Finally, there’s Peacock Premium Plus, which costs $9.99 a month or $100 a year. This allows subscribers to access the service’s full library of content – generally without any ads. There are a handful of commercials still incorporated in some instances such as Peacock channels, well as a few shows and movies. According to the note in the platform itself, “due to streaming rights,” it reads, “a small amount of programming will still contain ads (Peacock channels, events and a few shows and movies).” This isn’t exactly a new practice, as Hulu and CBS All Access also have this on their supposedly ad-free option.

For those simply wanting to try the new streaming service, Peacock’s free version is a good place to start. It allows subscribers to check first what the new streaming platform is all about before making the decision to spend money on it – if they ever do so. Ultimately, Peacock Premium would more likely cater to the general public as it allows full access to the platform’s library at a low cost, despite a few ads peppered throughout.
