Need For Speed 2 Updates Is The Aaron Paul Sequel Happening

Will Aaron Paul rev up again for Need For Speed 2? From the very beginning, video games have been proven tough to successfully adapt into movies. The first attempt was 1993’s Super Mario Bros, which suffered through a messy production and swapped out the cheerful tone of the games for a dark, dingy Blade Runner look. The film was a flop and further duds like Street Fighter and Double Dragon followed, though 1995’s Mortal Kombat is still a B-movie gem.

The critical reputation of video game movies or TV adaptations is getting a little better, thanks to the success of Netflix’s Castlevania or Detective Pikachu. The genre has yet to produce a truly fantastic movie, however, and 2014’s Need For Speed did little to elevate the genre. After Breaking Bad launched Aaron Paul’s career, the actor was chosen to lead the cast of this big-budget adaptation of the EA game series, with a supporting cast that included Imogen Poots, Dominic Cooper, and Michael Keaton. The film’s action was a little more grounded than the Fast And Furious series, but despite some exciting car chases, it was let down by tepid drama and failed to impress domestic audiences or critics alike.

A sequel was announced shortly after Need for Speed’s release, but there’s been very little news of it since. Despite Need for Speed’s underwhelming critical reception, its relative box office success and the lucrative nature of the action-racing genre (as proven by the success of the Fast and Furious saga), it seems that Need For Speed could be destined to return. However, while the film did decent business – generally speaking – what exactly are the odds of Need For Speed 2?

Need For Speed Was A U.S. Box Office Flop (But Was Huge In China)

One immediate roadblock to a sequel was the fact Need For Speed’s domestic haul was less than $45 million, which didn’t even cover its production budget. That said, it did much better overseas, especially in China, which eventually brought its box-office total to $200 million worldwide. This mixture of domestic failure but worldwide success could complicate the sequel’s chances, with distributors unsure of how well Need For Speed 2 would perform at the box office. Not only that; marketing a sequel to an unsuccessful film is problematic, to say the least, and many believe that China’s box office isn’t as important to Hollywood as one might think.

Need For Speed 2 Was Originally Announced In 2015

To the surprise of many, Need For Speed 2 was confirmed in 2015, which was planned to be a co-production between EA and the China Movie Channel Program Center. The plan was to make Need For Speed a major international series with the bulk of the sequel being shot in China. During a 2016 Collider interview for thriller Triple 9, Aaron Paul confirmed he’d heard rumblings about Need For Speed 2. He also revealed he didn’t know what the story would be and his involvement would be dependent on the material, but he’d be open to a return due to having a great time making the original. Paul has proven he understands good storytelling by changing Jesse’s Breaking Bad finale, so his willingness to return could prompt Need For Speed 2’s script to make up for the original’s shortcomings.

Need For Speed 2 Is Unlikely To Happen

It’s now been more than six years since Need For Speed 2 was announced, suggesting the project has gone dormant. If the series does continue at this point a reboot is more likely, as the original movie has been largely forgotten. There’s always a slim chance it could be revived but the sequel is likely dead.
