After four fantastic seasons of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, the streaming service came out with an interactive special to get fans connected to Kimmy one last time. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Schmidt vs. the Reverend was released yesterday, and it follows Kimmy on an adventure to free other potential mole women before she weds her fiancé, Freddy.
As an interactive special, viewers are given the choice to help Kimmy and co. with their decision-making. Depending on the options viewers choose, the outcome of the special can be very different from other viewers’ experiences. For anyone who was too wrapped up in the selection process, here are 10 things to take notice of on that second viewing.
10 Yuko & Netflix
Before the special begins, Yuko the robot takes center stage to give viewers a tutorial on how to watch the interactive film. She explains viewers can choose what they want to see happen or they can simply sit back and let the streaming service choose for them. Yuko — and other robots like her— pop up here and there throughout the series and special but in the tutorial, Yuko is wearing the Netflix logo on her chest as a nod to the service responsible for streaming.
9 Titus Was In Sliding Doors 2
In Kimmy Schmidt vs. the Reverend, both Titus and Kimmy are insanely rich. Kimmy went on to become a successful author whereas Titus is a big movie star.
When Titus goes back to his place to decide between napping or going to the gym, a movie poster for Sliding Doors 2 can be seen on the wall. Sliding Doors released in 1998 and told the tale of a woman (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) stuck in two realities. Ironically, this interactive movie is similar to the Sliding Doors concept, since the viewers have the option of choosing the characters’ fates.
8 Read The Book’s Text
Kimmy is carrying around the book she found in Jan throughout the special. When she and Titus are stuck in the woods, she realizes that the owner left clues in the book written in lemon juice. When Titus licks the pages and finds the one that tastes like lemon, the two are so focused on the lemon juice inscription that the rest of the text gets ignored.
In this close-up, the book does something similar to the Sliding Doors concept mentioned above: Kimmy and Titus have the same tough decisions to make as the protagonist in the novel. Their fate and the fates of those mole women can be drastically different if the viewer chooses poorly.
7 There’s An Office Shout-Out
When Kimmy finally catches up to the Reverend, she has a decision to make. Does she shoot him, stomp him, spare him, or ‘splode him? With a gun in her backpack, Kimmy is in control of the Reverend’s fate.
As she’s standing over him, the Reverend says “That’s what she said!” Funny enough, this could be a small nod to actor Ellie Kemper’s time on The Office as Erin Hannon. Throughout The Office, Michael Scott always said “that’s what she said” to make a raunchy double entendre.
6 Donna Maria Speaks English Now?
When Kimmy finds the mysterious book in her backpack, viewers have the choice of choosing who Kimmy calls: Cyndee, Gretchen, or Donna Maria? If the viewer chooses Donna Maria, they’ll notice that Donna is a whole new character. Not only does she speak English now, but she’s actually nice to Kimmy and not judgmental. If you take a look around the office Donna Maria is in, she played around with the “mole woman” title and created her own mole sauce empire.
5 Is Sharon Played By Two Different Babies?
When Kimmy and Titus finally reach the gas station, Johnny Knoxville’s character leaves them alone with his baby. Depending on the choice that viewers selected, one version has Kimmy correctly guessing the baby’s name as Sharon while the other claims Knoxville’s character never named his baby. Regardless of the baby’s name, they appear to be played by two different babies. As of this publishing, the baby isn’t credited on the IMDb page, but one has much darker hair than the other. The baby on the left has fuller eyebrows and bangs cut straight across their forehead. The baby on the right, however, has much lighter eyebrows and not so much hair on their head.
4 Okay, Bye-Bye!
There are a few familiar faces in Kimmy Schmidt vs. the Reverend, including Yuko, Buckley, and Xanthippe. But another low-key character that pops up a few times (depending on what the viewers choose) is Robert Durst, also known as the “okay, bye-bye” guy. He’s seen wearing a wig at Kimmy and Freddy’s wedding, sitting next to Mikey.
3 The Isle Of Herm
When Freddy and Kimmy become distracted from planning their wedding, Freddy suggests talking about their honeymoon instead (wink, wink). He proposes staying at the family castle on the Isle of Herm. Just in case anyone was curious, the Isle of Herm is in fact actually part of the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands are self-governed but are possessed by the Crown. Nevertheless, the Isle of Herm is incredibly small with no castle owned by the Windsors.
2 Frederick’s Dad Died In Childbirth?
Viewers know more about Kimmy’s upbringing, considering she’s the star of the show. But Freddy is an entirely new character in the special. As Kimmy’s fiancé, viewers learn a little more about his past and as it turns out, he was almost as sheltered as Kimmy was. But what about his parents? With Kimmy’s mom being a flake and her dad being absent, Kimmy doesn’t have parental figures to look up to. Similarly, Freddy claimed his father died. But what some viewers didn’t catch is that Kimmy mentioned his father died in childbirth.Does this mean he died in the delivery room while Freddy was born… or that he somehow birthed Freddy?
1 The Special Really Doesn’t Want Viewers Seeing Kimmy & Freddy Kiss
Viewers are given the option to help Kimmy make up her mind with what to do once she’s home with Freddy. Does she make out with him? Or does she read a book or wedding plan instead? For those who wanted to see Kimmy and Freddy make out, the special breaks the fourth wall by having Kimmy, Freddy, and Cyndee tell viewers they made the wrong decision. With so much to do, making out was not a priority. Whoops!
