Several anime shows premiere every year. Among these, only a fraction become breakout hits. While a number of action and fantasy anime like My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan usually take the center stage, there are other hidden gems like Dorohedoro that go unnoticed.
Considering how bizarrely imaginative it is with its premise, it is truly impressive how smoothly MAPPA Studio has transitioned its source material to anime. Even so, despite being one hell of an anime, Dorohedoro remained unnoticed by many anime viewers. The good news is that along with many other underrated anime epics, Dorohedoro is now available on Netflix.
10 Kuromukuro
Created by PA Works Studio, Kuromukuro is an original sci-fi anime set in the dawn of the 21st century. It begins with the discovery of an ancient artifact, which the United Nations Kurobe Research Institute tries to investigate. While they are at it, Yukina Shirahane, a high school girl, visits the facility and finds the artifact.
To her surprise, she is able to unravel its complex puzzles and that’s when a young samurai named Kennosuke Tokisada Ouma appear before her. Now the two must join forces to and defend Earth against an approaching threat.
9 Levius
Similar to Megalo Box, Levius unfolds in a dystopian world where cybernetically augmented humans duke it out in a sport akin to boxing. Among all the fighters competing to be the best, there’s young Levius who has a slight edge—he only fights to survive.
Levius isn’t any different from most other sports anime shows, which revolve around the lives of underdogs. However, what makes it a notch better than most martial arts anime is its well-choreographed action scenes and taut 12-chapter storytelling.
8 Carole & Tuesday
Although thematically quite different, almost all of Shinichirō Watanabe’s anime have some musical coherence. Carole & Tuesday is no exception. The anime is set in the near future where mankind has initiated its migration to Mars. Living on the planet’s Alba City is Carole, a part-timer who spends her nights playing the piano.
Living a similar life is Tuesday, who’s from a wealthy family but has run away from home to become an acoustic guitarist. When the two girls fatefully cross paths, it’s their shared love for music that unites them. Together, they join forces to go up against AI that has dominated the world of music.
7 Sirius the Jaeger
Sirius the Jaeger goes back in time to the 1930s where blood-sucking vampires have wreaked havoc in Tokyo. That’s when Jaegers come into the picture. They are zany vampire hunters who carry musical instruments to disguise their identity and show no mercy when they run into vampires.
The show centers on Yuliy, a Jaeger with a tragic past who has werewolf blood in him. Pretending to help the city law enforcement, he and his team try to find the mysterious mystical Ark of Sirius before the vampires can get their hands on the powerful artifact.
6 Hi-Score Girl
While most game-centric anime are mere recreations of MMORPG setups, Hi-Score Girl brings a dash of slice-of-life to its gaming themes. It centers on Harou, aka “beastly fingers,” who has mastered arcade gaming. But then comes Akira, a stoic young girl who becomes an expert at every game she plays.
What starts as a rivalry between them, soon turns into a profound relationship that Harou can’t help but embrace. Apart from being breezy and heartwarming, Hi-Score Girl has an added layer of gaming nostalgia that will appeal to anyone who was into classics like Street Fighter.
5 Children Of The Whales
J.C Staff studio has several gems under its belt. Among these, Children of the Whales is a lesser-known anime set on a fantastical island called the Mud Whale. The island accommodates people known as the “Marked,” who possess supernatural abilities but also suffer from untimely deaths.
Chakuro, who is another resident of the island, spends his days discovering other new islands. His endeavors take him to a mysterious island with an archaic civilization, where a girl changes everything he knows about himself and the world around him. Children of the Whales has a very dense, dreamlike mythology which can be a little baffling at times, but gripping nonetheless.
4 Forest Of Piano
Based on an eponymous manga, Forest of Piano tells the tale of two young boys who come from very different backgrounds. Kai, the son of a sex worker, grows up playing a broken-down piano that he finds in the woods near his home. In contrast, Syuhei is far more privileged as he grew up in a family of renowned pianists. But somehow, the worlds of the two boys collide and their love for music takes them on a spectacular journey.
The music anime genre may not be for everyone. But for viewers looking for anime in the likes of March Comes In like a Lion, this one perfectly fits the bill.
3 Aggretsuko
For the uninitiated, Aggretsuko might come off as a show that’s solely meant for kids. After all, it is based on a character created by the same mascot company that created Hello Kitty. However, when it comes to its themes, it resonates more with an adult audience.
It revolves around the day-to-day snags of Retsuko, a red panda who vents out the frustrations of her office life by getting drunk at a local karaoke cafe. Using death metal as an outlet for her rage, she sings at the cafe week after week.
2 The Disastrous Life of Saiki K: Reawakened
Netflix brings new life to The Disastrous Life of Saiki K with its ONA reboot of the renowned deadpan comedy show. With titular character Saiki K. at its fore, the 6-episode series walks viewers through all the dilemmas he faces because of his supernatural abilities.
Despite being stoic, Saiki often finds himself in situations where he can’t help but use his abilities. However, every time he does so, things always take a hilarious turn, making him question his loyalty to the people around him.
1 Dorohedoro
It’s hard to confine Dorohedoro into a specific genre. There are times when it terrifies viewers with body horror. And then other times, it makes one laugh with its snarky humor. Along with that, it has elements of mystery, slice-of-life, and even a tinge of romance. What more can a viewer ask for?
It focuses on a reptile-faced man named Caiman who is determined to find the wizard, who made him look that way. During this search, he goes far beyond the boundaries of his ghastly city and finds himself amid the greatest wizards of his world who do nothing but terrorize the weak.
