Netflix’s planned animated series based on Jeff Smith’s Bone has reportedly been canceled.

According to TheWrap, a number of creators say that “the Kids & Family space at Netflix Animation has changed” amid the firing of Phil Rynda, Netflix’s Director of Creative Leadership and Development for Original Animation, and several of his staff members. As a result, several well-received animated series are not being renewed for new seasons and a number of gestating projects have been abruptly canceled, including the Bone series.

News of Bone’s apparent cancellation comes after Netflix’s stock dropped 30 percent after reporting a loss of 200,000 subscribers for the first quarter of 2022.

Written and illustrated by Smith, Bone is a beloved independent comic book series that initially ran for a total of 55 issues from 1991 to 2004. Smith self-published Bone through his Cartoon Books label for issues #1-20. The series was then published by Image Comics for issues #21-27 before jumping back to Cartoon Books for issues #28-55. Bone follows cousins Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone, who are run out of their hometown of Boneville and find themselves in a mysterious, magical valley.

In 2019, it was announced that Netflix would be adapting Bone into an animated series. “I’ve waited a long time for this,” Smith said at the time. “Netflix is the perfect home for Bone. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter-by-chapter and book-by-book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands Bone and is committed to doing something special — this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world.” Smith soon confirmed that the show would be 2D-animated.

With Netflix’s adaptation apparently falling through, the animated series joins the list of unproduced on-screen Bone projects. Nickelodeon Movies attempted to produce a film adaptation of Bone in the 1990s, though the project was ultimately shelved, as Smith objected to the studio’s plans to include pop music in the film, which would have compromised his vision. Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to Bone in the 2000s began developing a trilogy of 3D-animated films around 2016, though the first planned movie was itself canceled in favor of Netflix’s series.
