Netflix comedy-drama The Politician, starring Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow, just wrapped up its second season. But the first season, released in Fall 2019, set the stage for the story.

Payton Hobart is an ambitious high school senior who is determined to work in politics, with plans to eventually become President of the United States. And by plans, he truly means it. There is no other path for him.

Everyone has to start somewhere, however. And for Payton, that was running for student body president. Each season chronicles his journey in a different political race. And while season two focused on his run for a senator position in New York, season one is where it all began. But how did each episode stack up, according to movie database site IMDb?

8 Episode 6: The Assassination Of Payton Hobart – 7.6

While all episodes ranked above a 7.0, this episode had the lowest ranking among viewers. In it, Payton is forced to resign after secrets come out and his friend Skye runs in his place. He has also lost his acceptance to Harvard University, marking a low for the ambitious teen. Perhaps it was the bizarre storyline of Skye poisoning Payton that soured viewers on the episode.

In another parallel storyline, Infinity accidentally shoots her boyfriend Ricardo and the two agree to pin everything on Infinity’s grandmother Dusty, who, it has been revealed by now, was purposely making Infinity sick to reap the sympathy rewards. And in yet another storyline, Astrid makes the difficult decision to turn her own father into the FBI for wire fraud.

7 Episode 1: Pilot – 7.9

As the title implies, this was the very first episode of the series, and while it didn’t rank among the highest, it’s a good sign as that means the series got better and better with each episode. This is the episode where viewers meet Payton, learn of his career aspirations as well as his backstory of having been adopted into a wealthy family.

It’s also learned that he is running against the shockingly handsome but also troubled jock River who looks like he belongs in an ad for Calvin Klein and not high school. Turns out River, who is in a serious relationship with Astrid, explored his sexuality in the past with Payton and the two are secretly close. But it ends in terror as River commits suicide in front of Payton. Astrid decides to take his place in the race for student body president, running against Payton.

And Payton’s warped understanding of dirty politics come to light when he hatches a plan with his equally cunning girlfriend, Alice, to stage a break-up to gain sympathy votes. This episode also introduces Infinity as a student supposedly suffering from cancer but that many suspect is faking her illness.

6 Episode 2: The Harrington Commode – 7.9

Rated the same as episode one, this one sees even more trauma as Georgina, Payton’s mother, reveals to her wealthy & much older husband Keaton, that she is actually in love with a woman, causing him to try and commit suicide. While Payton sits by his adoptive father’s side while he is in a coma, his cruel and dumb attractive twin adoptive brothers try to lobby for the family fortune.

Keaton hears everything and plots with Payton to write the twins out of his will and leave everything to his adopted golden son, further showing how Payton knows how to charm people and get his way. Meanwhile, in an effort to figure out if Infinity– who Payton has now strategically selected to be his running mate– is really sick, he organizes a blood drive to try and secretly run tests.

5 Episode 4: Gone Girl – 7.9

Interestingly, this episode was directed by actor Helen Hunt. In it, Infinity discovers that she doesn’t actually have cancer and that her grandmother has been purposely making her sick. In a weird attempt to find herself and purpose in life, Astrid runs away with Ricardo to New York.

Payton is suspected of having something to do with Astrid’s disappearance until his family pays off the cops to let him go. And Skye starts to wonder if she really wants to be on Astrid’s team, considering jumping ship to the enemy.

4 Episode 5: The Voter – 7.9

Another episode that ranks at 7.9, it’s all about the two sides lobbying for the undecided voters who could, in effect, make a massive difference in who wins. The focus is on one particular student, Elliot, who seemingly has zero interest in the election or either candidate.

While both Payton and Astrid to try talk smack about one another, Skye is now working with Payton and Infinity is running loose, accusing Payton of using her & Astrid of stealing her ex. In the end, Elliot never places his vote. Nonetheless, it was an interesting episode that shows the lengths those running for office might go to in order to convince someone to vote for them.

3 Episode 3: October Surprise – 8.0

This is when things really started to pick up for audiences, as this episode was the first to rank at an 8 out of 10. Payton learns that his family wealth can easily get him into Harvard with a simple large donation and decides on principle that he no longer wants to go there. However, when he refuses this offer, they accept him anyway, without any conditions. Payton goes to share the good news with his girlfriend Alice, but finds her in bed with James.

Infinity, meanwhile, still doesn’t know she isn’t really sick. In order to help Astrid, Ricardo gives her a tape that shows Infinity, who is still working as Payton’s running mate, calling a reporter a mean name. Upset, Payton fires Infinity who breaks up with Ricardo, sending him into Astrid’s arms.

2 Episode 7: The Assassination Of Payton Hobart: Part 2 – 8.0

Payton wins the election in this episode, but only by default because Astrid decides at the last minute to drop out. She does this on purpose because it means he won’t actually get the satisfaction of beating her. She successfully gets into his head and all of the initiatives he wanted to bring forth don’t get passed.

This is when Payton gets sick from the poisoned cupcake Skye made and, in another bizarre move, Dusty, played by the incomparable Jessica Lange, tries to get Ricardo to actually kill Payton. In Ricardo’s true weird style, he attempts the murder by shooting Payton with a BB gun containing a pellet that has possum guts on it, instantly giving Payton sepsis.

1 Episode 8: Vienna – 8.6

Equally good news for the series is that while the pilot episode ranked among the least favorite, the first season ended on a high note with the finale ranked as the best episode by a mile. The episode jumps three years ahead, with Payton now living in New York and attending university there. Except he has spiralled downward, singing in cocktail lounges and imbibing on too many alcoholic beverages while he does.

But when McAfee graduates from Columbia and starts working on the Dede Standish campaign, she realizes this could be just the challenge Payton needs. No one has run against Dede in decades and her campaign is stale. After managing to get Alice back– who has left another man at the altar– and seeing visions of River encouraging him to run, Payton decides that he is going to go for it. And discovering a juicy secret about Dede gives him extra fuel to do so. It perfectly sets the stage for season two.
