Netflix’s Tiger King 10 Things Carole Baskin Says The Show Lied About

Tiger King is a new Netflix docu-series that isn’t short on drama. While the tiger king himself is undoubtedly Joe Exotic, the second star of the series is Carole Baskin. Audiences got to see Carole’s sanctuary Big Cat Rescue, her feud with Joe and his zoo, and some background information about her husband’s disappearance two decades ago.

However, Carole hates what Tiger King became, and she made a lengthy blog post going into detail about the great untruths told in the documentary. Some things are misconstrued, some are lies by omission, and some are just straight-up wrong! Here are ten pieces of information from Tiger King where Carole and her husband Howard say the truth was bent:

10 Interviewed Under False Pretenses

Carole and Howard have denied many opportunities to be involved in films because they did not trust the producers to not sensationalize the film and instead create informative and meaningful content. They researched Tiger King’s filmmaker Eric Goode, and they decided to trust him when he said he wanted to make the “Blackfish” of the Tiger industry.

Blackfish is a film about the dark side of Sea World and the abuse the fish and animals faced there, and Eric Goode said he wanted to make a film about the abuse tigers face due to cub petting and the inhumane zoos they live in after they grow up. While the docu-series did touch on this, this was not the primary focus of the production.

9 Joe Was Not Supposed To Be The Star

It’s no secret that Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin are enemies, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Carole and her husband didn’t want to be involved in a show about him. They were told that Joe would be one of the people interviewed and featured in the documentary, but producers insisted that Joe was not going to be the focus of their filming.

Audiences know that is not the case of the final product made. There’s no denying that the show is about Joe; even the name, Tiger King, refers to him.

8 Leading Up To Don’s Disappearing

The show’s producers felt that it was important to mention Carole’s previous husband Don’s disappearance as part of her background, but they promised that it would be done in a tasteful and respective manner.

Carole feels that this was not done at all, and it’s hard to disagree with her. The people interviewed made it seem like Carole definitely killed her husband, and she says that a lot of things were taken out of context, like the word “disappearance” in Don’s power of attorney. Carole was informed that Don was loaning money to people in a sort of mafia in Costa Rica, so she added “disappearance” to the document in case something happened.

7 The Meat Grinder

The infamous theory behind Don’s disappearance is that Carole murdered him and fed him to her tigers after grinding the meat in a meat grinder they had. Carole told producers that the meat grinder they had (similar to the one on the left) was not like the one the producers chose to show (the one on the right), but they used the incorrect version anyway.

Seeing the actual size of the meat grinder, it’s understandable why the detectives would deny Don’s daughters’ request to DNA test it, and it makes sense when Carole said, “You couldn’t even fit a hand in there.”

6 Crowd Size

When showing Carole and Howard’s Big Cat Sanctuary, a large crowd of people was shown getting ready to come in. Joe commented that they are constantly doing huge tours, and Carole and Howard claim that the crowd is not an accurate representation of day to day business for them.

That footage was from a once a year event that they do called a Walk About where around 600 people come to learn about the cats. On most days, they only take groups of about twenty people at a time to go on tours on the facility.

5 Don’s Wealth

In the documentary, many people mention Don being a multimillionaire, with people guessing that he was worth as much as twenty million dollars. Carole says that while he had more money than she did, he was probably only worth six figures when they first met. They worked together as business partners in real estate for ten years before they got married, so a lot of money he had when they got married was actually made with her.

When he disappeared they had a portfolio of properties to sell that was probably worth around five million dollars.

4 Anne’s Embezzling

One person interviewed about Don’s disappearance was his executive assistant Anne McQueen. Carole says that Anne is not a trustworthy person, and she was not being 100% truthful about her involvement in Don’s life.

She had been caught embezzling around $600,000 in properties by purchasing them with Carole and Don’s money and then putting them in her own name. Carole even included the documents from the case in her blog post, claiming that this is not someone viewers should be trusting regarding the statements she made in the docu-series.

3 Animal Cages

Carole and Howard say that their cages were falsely represented on Tiger King and that the small enclosure shown by Joe was only part of the entire enclosure when Joe claimed that they were seeing the whole thing. Carole says that their smallest enclosure is 1,200 feet, the size of a small house, and the largest enclosure is two acres.

They also have natural foliage that would be found in the animals’ natural habitat, which Joe describes as “weeds.” His enclosures are much smaller than Carole’s, she says, and the animals at his zoo live on pebbles instead of something closer to their natural environment.

2 Suing Joe’s Mother

It is mentioned in the documentary that Carole was suing Joe’s mother, and Carole says that this is true. However, while Joe and his parents seem to maintain his mother’s innocence on Tiger King and claim that Carole was harassing her, Carole says that Joe’s mother was, in fact, guilty of helping Joe hide assets that belonged to him or his zoo by moving them into her name.

Carole says that a settlement was made where Joe’s mother actually admitted to the fraudulent activities.

1 Making Money Off Of The Sanctuary

Joe likes to talk about how Carole takes all of the money from the sanctuary for herself instead of paying her workers, but Big Cat Rescue is a non-profit organization.

Some workers are paid, but the majority are volunteers who donate their time knowing that they will not be financially compensated. Carole says that any money coming in from the sanctuary goes right back into the business to help the cats and their mission. She also did not take a paycheck in the first twenty years that the sanctuary was open.
