Netflix developed a new children’s movie all about heroes. We Can Be Heroes has a fun spin on superhero abilities that audiences have come to love. The real kicker of the 2020 movie was that the heroes don’t save the day. It’s instead their children with powers and one powerless individual who rises to learn her value.
Many can agree that any adult wouldn’t watch this movie if they had to. It’s for parents and their children to enjoy on Friday night. Surprisingly, the movie has its perks that will keep an adult audience entertained, though it’s definitely not perfect.
10 Adult: A Decent Story And Twist
The movie itself has an intriguing storyline and end twist that just might surprise an adult audience. To be fair, the reveal of who the villain is wasn’t a shocker. The story follows the cities best group of heroes being called on to save everyone from an alien invasion, but they all somehow get caught.
It’s then up to their children to save everyone. Each child has their own unique superpower, except for one girl. By the time they infiltrate the alien ship, they know how the bad guys are: the very president and leader of the Superheroes program. In a fun twist of events, one of the children is actually the alien leader and sets up the invasion to train the children.
9 Children: The Villain
When it comes to the story’s supposed main villain, it’s geared more towards children. Any adult viewer would have easily suspected that the somewhat mean authoritative figure is behind it all. The overall scheme isn’t as elaborate as one may think. It’s an alien “takeover” of Earth, and the first thing they do is get rid of the heroes.
The movie did do a good job at creating another twist with who the real mastermind was. In the end, the villain wasn’t a villain at all, but it still warrants a small nod of approval from adults.
8 Adult: Some Form Of Violence And Comedy
This perk from the movie is only seen in small dosages. Seeing as it’s a superhero movie, there needed to be some action, whether it’s the heroes trying to fight off the aliens or the children doing so. There’s even a huge montage scene of the children learning combat skills and using their powers. Adult viewers will have some fun watching the fight scenes despite them not being at the level of the MCU or DCEU.
There’s even a scene where the main characters punch the bad guys; sometimes a little violence is needed when trying to stop an alien invasion. There are even some comedic moments even adults would laugh at. Even when Marcus’s (Pedro Pascal) mom rescues them, he shyly goes “Hi, Mom” and she retorts back “No, no don’t ‘hi, mom’ me.”
7 Children: The Unrealistic Circumstances
The cities mightiest heroes get taken down in a mere two minutes. That has to be a record. Adult viewers will find it ridiculous that once all the heroes go fight the aliens, they’re taken down almost immediately. It’s a completely unrealistic circumstance that would put Captain America to shame.
Some of the heroes get taken down after one hit or seconds after attacking. Not even Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley) was able to withstand it long enough. It’s safe to say they don’t do much training anymore on their own or as a team. Not to mention that the children roam around the ship without anyone realizing it.
6 Adult: The Cool Superpowers
Putting aside the adult heroes, the powers of their children are unique, fun, and a bit impressive. There’s just a slight flaw to each of their powers. A-Capella (Lotus Blossom) can move objects with her voice by singing certain octaves. Slo-Mo (Dylan Henry Lau) is an interesting take on the classic Speedster. He moves so fast through time that he actually goes in slow motion.
Noodles (Lyon Daniels), as his name might imply, can stretch his body like Mr.Fanstastic. Rewind and Fast Forward (Isaiah Russell-Bailey and Akira Akbar) are twins who have opposite abilities. One can speed up time, while the other can go back a few seconds. Their powers aren’t 100% perfect and still need fine-tuning.
5 Children And Adult: Animation
The animation for its movie is well suited for younger audiences. It’s not on the same drastic and detailed level as other superhero movies, but it gets the job done. Not to mention that the movie itself is very bright, colorful, and sometimes whimsical. When honing in their skills, they fight off hologram samurais.
A-Capella also uses her voice to propel a train car off its tracks and fly through the air across the city. It also goes without saying that the renderings for the aliens are adorable and fun, and even the villains sprout tentacle arms from their backs. For most adults, it does a good job of enthralling children.
4 Adult: Fan Favorite Past Characters
One of the reasons why the movie generated some buzz is that it brought back two favorite superheroes that are now all grown up. A lot of viewers who are now adults remember watching The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D in 2005. It became a sensation starring Taylor Lautner before he rose to fame in Twilight.
Sharkboy (Lautner) and Lavagirl made their return in the 202o Netflix movie back in their superhero roles. They’re no longer young children and are now grown up and even have a daughter named Guppy (Vivien Blair). For adults who loved their original movie, it was a blast from the past.
3 Children: Child-Friendly Dialogue
This one’s a no brainer. The dialogue in children’s movies is often pretty basic, and, as such, can be a bit grating for adult viewers.. The movie needs to appeal and be watchable by a younger audience, meaning no profanity or harsh language whatsoever.
Because of this, the dialogue can seem a bit comical and almost boring for adults to get through, not to mention that the characters’ lines have to be easy enough for the child actors to memorize and act out in front of a camera. Also, the content needs to be digestible for its viewers.
2 Adult: Hollywood Cast
For anyone who didn’t watch the initial trailer, they’d be surprised to learn just how many star-studded actors make an appearance in the movie. It’s a perk for any adult that decides to watch on their own or with their family. It included The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal as Marcus Moreno, a master swordsman, and hero.
Alongside Pascal was Mr.Robot actor Christian Slater as jet back wielding Tech-No. As for the supposed villains, Priyanka Chopra Jonas played the leader of the superhero program and the supposed bad guy, along with Christopher McDonald as the U.S. President, as well as Boyd Holbrook as Miracle Guy, a version of Superman. Audiences will be surprised to see Sung Kang, who is well known for playing the character Han Lu in the Fast & Furious franchise.
1 Children: The Underlying Message
Every children’s movie needs to be able to teach its audience something valuable—some underlying message about oneself. This movie certainly had one. Missy Moreno (YaYa Gosselin) is the daughter of Marcus who had her dad promise to not go back into the field. He goes back on his word when the world is in danger.
The thing is that Missy has no powers, unlike the rest of them. She must learn to accept who she is and discover that she is just as great. She learns that she’s deserving of being a strong leader. The other characters also learn to step up and how to control their powers and work together. Guppy learns that she can’t let her anger fuel her and her decisions.
