After Bela Lugosi made vampires terrifying and before Robert Pattinson made vampires sappy, Jason Patric made them cool in The Lost Boys. The film’s director, Joel Schumacher, sadly passed away recently after a battle with cancer, but his legacy will live on for years in such cinematic gems as Falling Down, St. Elmo’s Fire, and of course, his 1987 vampire comedy.
With one of the best casts of any ‘80s movie and vampirism symbolically standing in for teen male bonding, The Lost Boys is undeniably a classic.
10 Richard Donner Was Originally Set To Direct
After acquiring the script, Richard Donner intended to direct The Lost Boys himself. However, he ended up being tapped to helm Lethal Weapon and moved on to direct Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in that action-packed noir classic instead.
So, the director’s chair was empty and Joel Schumacher was hired to bring The Lost Boys to the screen. Donner still acted as an executive producer.
9 Jim Carrey Was Considered For The Role Of David
When casting was underway for The Lost Boys, the producers considered hiring Jim Carrey to play David. The Bruce Almighty star’s take on the role would’ve undoubtedly been a lot different than Kiefer Sutherland’s eventual performance. Carrey had previously played a vampire in the movie Once Bitten.
Ben Stiller also auditioned for a role, although it’s unclear which one, and Fred Gwynne was up for the part of Max. Joel Schumacher originally wanted a blonde in the vein of Meg Ryan to play Star, but Jason Patric convinced the director to cast his Solarbabies co-star Jami Gertz instead.
8 Corey Feldman’s Performance Was Influenced By Sylvester Stallone And Chuck Norris
In Corey Feldman’s discussions about his character with director Joel Schumacher, the actor was told to play him like a typical ‘80s action hero. So, Feldman rented action-packed thrillers starring Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Norris to help inspire his performance in The Lost Boys.
7 The Actor Initially Cast To Play Grandpa Died Before Filming
There were two actors chosen to play Grandpa before the eventual choice, Barnard Hughes, played the part. Initially, Keenan Wynn was cast to play the role, but he died before filming began.
Then, John Carradine was chosen, which must’ve been exciting, because he’s starred in a ton of classic vampire movies, but he was too sick to make the shoot. So, Hughes was cast.
6 Gerard McMahon Wrote The Theme Song Without Seeing The Movie
When Gerard McMahon wrote the theme song for The Lost Boys, the ‘80s gothic rock hit “Cry Little Sister,” he hadn’t seen a single frame from the movie. He wrote the whole thing based on the vibes he got from reading the screenplay alone.
McMahon recorded the song under the pseudonym Gerard McMann (which isn’t too dissimilar to his actual name) and it reached the number 15 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
5 Glitter Was Added To The Fake Blood
This was the first on-screen collaboration between Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, who went on to be dubbed “The Two Coreys” as they starred in a handful of popular ‘80s movies together.
In the documentary Bloodsucking Cinema, Haim said that the fake blood used in The Lost Boys had glitter added to it so that it would shimmer and shine in the light.
4 INXS Convinced Kiefer Sutherland To Take His Role In The Lost Boys
Kiefer Sutherland was initially reluctant to take his role in The Lost Boys, which would go on to become his most iconic character until he started playing CTU agent Jack Bauer in Fox’s real-time action drama 24.
What convinced him to take the part was the fact that director Joel Schumacher had tapped INXS and Jimmy Barnes to record songs for the soundtrack. Sutherland had been a huge fan of each artist since spending a summer in Australia.
3 Jason Patric Did A Lot Of Work On The Script
When Joel Schumacher was reshaping and retooling the script for The Lost Boys into a sexier, fresher take on vampire lore, Jason Patric was heavily involved in the rewrites, according to Kiefer Sutherland.
2 Corey Feldman’s Drug Abuse Almost Got Him Fired
When The Lost Boys went into production, Corey Feldman was struggling with drug addiction. He showed up to his first day of shooting on a comedown from a cocaine binge and kept falling asleep in between takes, so Joel Schumacher fired him.
However, the following day, Feldman apologized to Schumacher and promised to be professional for the rest of the shoot (which he was), so the director rehired him.
1 The Original Script Was For A G-Rated Movie
The original script for The Lost Boys was written as a G-rated kids’ movie. The characters were all little kids around Laddie’s age. According to Joel Schumacher, it was basically Peter Pan with vampires, hence the title.
David and Star were even called Peter and Wendy in that draft. Schumacher decided to make the movie a lot darker, with teenage characters and more violent content, so that The Lost Boys would be sexier.
