The Netflix series Never Have I Ever has delivered two solid seasons filled with laughs, tears, and awkward moments, but which season is the best?

The Netflix series Never Have I Ever was a huge hit when it debuted last year. Season 1 set the tone for this funny, unique, and sometimes heartbreaking series. Once fans were hooked, they eagerly awaited season 2, which was released on Netflix to a similarly positive reception.

Of course, with such a long wait in between the seasons, it is inevitable that fans are comparing how season 2 holds up against season 1. While it is difficult to name one season better than the others, there are certain aspects of each that one does better than the other.

10 Season 1: The One-Off Episode

In each season of Never Have I Ever, the show does a one-off episode focused on another character. Instead of telling the story through Devi’s eyes, these episodes are told through the perspective of another main character. In season 1, the focus is Ben and it is Paxton in season 2.

While each of these episodes successfully switches things up, the season 1 episode about Ben is the better of the two. Not only does the episode have the hilarious Andy Samberg filling in as the narrator, but it is the first time audiences really got to see a different side of Ben.

9 Season 2: Interesting Approaches To Tough Subjects

Season 1 needed to set up Devi’s story and put most of its focus on that. But with all that established, season 2 feels freer to touch on things like eating disorders and sexuality. Not only that, but they find new ways to speak about these things.

One of the most interesting aspects is seeing Fabiola and Eve as a new couple. Instead of having Fabiola feel perfectly content now that she is embracing her sexuality, she struggles with feeling like she doesn’t belong in the queer community either. It is a unique take on a familiar story.

8 Season 1: Fabiola And Eleanor

From the very beginning of the series, Fabiola and Eleanor have been some of the standout characters. They are loyal best friends to Devi but they also got their own interesting storylines in season 1 to make them even more memorable.

For some reason, Fabiola and Eleanor feel as though they are pushed to the side more in season 2. They really don’t have much to do in the first half of the season and their storylines in the second half feel quite rushed. It is a disappointing use of two great characters.

7 Season 2: New Cast Additions

Perhaps part of the reason Fabiola and Eleanor aren’t used as much in season 2 is that there are some notable cast additions. It can be difficult to bring in new characters to an ensemble without it feeling forced, but most of the new arrivals fit perfectly in the show.

Aneesa is a clear stand-out, providing a rival for Devi but also allowing her to be her own complex character. Nirmala is also a great addition who adds some of the most heartwarming moments in the season.

6 Season 1: The Love Triangle

Paxton was the object of Devi’s obsession from the beginning of season 1 and the evolution of their relationship was fun to watch. Then when Ben became a possible love interest, it created a compelling love triangle.

However, season 2 leaned into this aspect of the story too much. There were constant back-and-worths about who likes Devi, who was mad at Devi, and who was jealous of who. Hopefully, they find a fresh approach to it in season 3 of Never Have I Ever.

5 Season 2: Kamala’s Storyline

With her kindness and intelligence, Kamala is one of the best characters on Never Have I Ever. Season 1 does a good job introducing her, establishing her hopes for the future, and setting up her pressure of getting married.

However, season 2 brings a more satisfying arc for Kamala. While her romantic life and what it means for her future are still very key to her story, this season really explored her professional dreams. It was interesting to see her battle against an unfair workplace and how that ended up impacting her relationship as well.

4 Season 1: Devi And Her Mother

While the romantic relationships are easy to get swept up in, the most important bond on Never Have I Ever is between Devi and her mother. It was such an interesting approach to season 1 to show how they are both struggling with the death of Devi’s father and how that causes a rift in their own relationship.

In some ways, it feels that season 2 lost sight of the importance of this relationship. There weren’t as many scenes of Devi and her mother together and when their storylines did eventually converge, it just wasn’t as emotionally satisfying.

3 Season 2: More Lighthearted

There are plenty of laughs to be had in Never Have I Ever, but season 1 is also extremely emotional. Within the first moments of the show, it addresses the death of Devi’s father, and the season very much centers around that incident.

Despite season 2 also tackling some heavy topics, it is a much more fun season. There is a lightheartedness to it all and the storylines generally have more joy in them. While the show is compelling in its sad moments, it is nice to have a lot of feel-good moments as well.

2 Season 1: Devi’s Grief

Though season 2 doesn’t spend as much time on the more tragic aspects of Devi’s life, those aspects are still very important to the story. However, when season 2 deals with Devi’s father, it is less effective, as with the voicemail he left on Devi’s phone.

Season 1 addresses the tragedy in a more straightforward way and is more interesting for it. While season 2 feels like it is finding ways for Devi to grieve for her father, her grief is the biggest aspect of season 2.

1 Season 2: Devi’s Guilt

It is always more interesting when a show is willing to have a flawed protagonist. Despite Devi being a star student in her school, she makes plenty of mistakes. In season 1, those mistakes are frustrating yet it is more infuriating when Devi clearly can’t see when she’s in the wrong.

However, season 2 very much deals with Devi being confronted with her mistakes. She makes terrible decisions that hurt people and she is forced to live with the guilt of what she did. That is much more interesting than seeing her being oblivious to her selfish behavior.
