New Assassins Creed Story Follows Chinas Last Assassin

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has taken fans all over the world – and all throughout time – since the first game in the franchise launched in 2007 courtesy of Ubisoft. From the original adventures of Altair throughout the Holy Land of the middle east, to the most recent entry in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, which saw players take control of the Viking Eivor, the series has spent more than a decade exploring the ongoing and seemingly endless invisible war between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the Templar Order. Now, courtesy of Viz Media, the series’ lore will be expanded upon even further with an all new manga, Assassin’s Creed: Blade of Shao Jun, which will explore the escapades of the last remaining Assassin in China’s Ming Dynasty.

The Assassin’s Creed series has already branched out far beyond the 12 video games in its main continuity, having inspired a 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, a line of comic books, animated series, and an upcoming Netflix show based on the property, a board game and even more. Now, the mythology of the Assassins will be explored even further with an action-packed manga that will follow the exploits of Shao Jun, the last member of the Brotherhood still operating in China as she tries to restore balance in the ongoing war against the Templars.

Coming February 16, the manga will see Shao Jun, a trainee of Ezio Auditore – who fans will know from main series’ second video game installment – trying to regain control from the Iron Tigers, a Chinese sect of the Templar Order that has wiped out all of the country’s Assassins. Shao Jun first appeared in Assassin’s Creed Embers, an animated movie based on the franchise before getting a game of her own in the 2.5-D sidescroller Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China. According the Viz, the manga will continue her adventures and see her “returning to her homeland,” where she “embarks on a vengeful quest to seek the mysterious box treasure that belongs to the Brotherhood.” The 160-page manga, with a story and art by Minoji Kurata, promises a blood-soaked tale as Shao Jun returns from Europe to her native country as she fights to regain the Assassins’ foothold against unspeakable odds. The Assassin’s Creed franchise has always been steeped in political intrigue and machinations and this new entry into the ever-expanding canon promises to continue that trend as Shao has to navigate the empire as she attempts to deal with the “political purge… sweeping over the land.” In addition to Shao Jun’s story, the book will also detail the happenings of her present-day descendant Lisa Huang as she uses the Animus (a device that allows users to experience their ancestors’ memories), which will add a modern-day element to the tale. What Huang doesn’t know, however, is that a colleague, Dr. Kagam, may be manipulating her and using her access to the past in order to find the mysterious box in the present day, offering parallel, intertwined thrill rides seeing good pitted against evil.

Over the years, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has centered around a number of different time periods and characters, and while Shao Jun has already left an indelible mark on the franchise’s legacy, it’ll be great for fans to see her story explored even further in her own dedicated manga. The book will be available in print and on digital platforms February 16.
