Marvel superhero comic book movie fans will have to wait until February 2012 to get their next fix, in the form of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. However, the next big Marvel cinematic events is (of course) writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, which should be getting a full-length trailer sometime sooner, rather than later.

However, in the meantime, we have a pair of new Avengers characters banners for you to check out – along with some official confirmation from Marvel that (as was previously reported) composer Alan Silvestri is indeed scoring Whedon’s superhero extravaganza.

On the off-chance you’re new to this whole Avengers thing, here is the official plot synopsis:

When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

That “team” includes Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), The Incredible Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). On the opposing side will be the likes of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his “mysterious” extraterrestrial army.

Now have a look at the latest Avengers characters banners (which we’ve also separated into individual posters for each character) below:

Here is an official statement from Silvestri, with regards to his being brought on to score The Avengers:

“This is actually a very unique experience [for me]. I’ve worked on films where there have been a number of stars and certainly worked on films where there have been characters of equal weight in terms of their level of importance and profile in the film, but this one is somewhat extreme in that regard because each of these characters has their own world and it’s a very different situation. It’s very challenging to look for a way to give everyone the weight and consideration they need, but at the same time the film is really about the coming together of these characters, which implies that there is this entity called the Avengers which really has to be representative of all of them together.”

Whedon has long been heralded for his ability to juggle ensemble casts and multiple characters, without neglecting or over-emphasizing any single one – as evidenced by his work on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, along with his “Astonishing X-Men” comic book run. So, hopefully, both he and Silvestri will be up to the challenge of making sure each individual Avengers player gets the opportunity to shine and play an important role in the film as a whole.

The Avengers arrives in theaters around the U.S. on May 4th, 2012.
