New Black Widow Predicting Yelena Belova’s MCU Future

Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova will become the new Black Widow, and here’s what her Marvel Cinematic Universe future could look like. Scarlett Johansson joined the MCU as Natasha Romanoff, the original Black Widow, in 2010 and has been featured in seven movies. She will soon add an eighth – and likely final – appearance when the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie is released. It was initially scheduled to hit theaters in May 2020 but has since been pushed to November due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Marvel Studios’ decision to give Natasha a solo film comes after her MCU fate was sealed in Avengers: Endgame. Natasha sacrificed herself on Vormir so the Avengers could get the Soul Stone and reverse Thanos’ snap. Her death means Black Widow will be a prequel in the MCU and primarily take place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The solo film will feature Natasha squaring off with Taskmaster and taking down the Red Room once and for all. Thanks to this story, Marvel fans will get to meet other Black Widows, including Yelena Belova.

Even though Black Widow will be the first time audiences meet Yelena, she has a history with Natasha already. The trailers have shown the closeness of their relationship, as they even refer to themselves as sisters. With Natasha’s MCU future limited at best, many have speculated that Yelena will become the new Black Widow in the MCU. This does appear to be the plan at Marvel Studios and should give the character a big MCU future.

Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova Will Probably Become The New Black Widow

Yelena’s path to taking over the Black Widow mantle after Natasha has been teased by Black Widow director Cate Shortland. She recently said in an interview that Florence Pugh would be handed the franchise baton and “propel another female storyline.” Now, instead of fans just believing that this transition makes sense due to comic history, the director of Black Widow has heavily implied that this is part of the Marvel plan.

In the comics, Yelena is introduced as an antagonist for Natasha do to her desire to prove she was the better Red Room trainee. This led to Yelena confronting Natasha on several occasions, although Natasha usually had the upper hand. She gradually distances herself from the Red Room and gains a better relationship with Nat over time. When Black Widow appeared to have died, Yelena decided to take on the title herself for some time. Yelena might not be one of Natasha’s foes in Black Widow, but there are obvious parallels between the comic story and the MCU.

There are also several benefits for the MCU to have Yelena carry on the Black Widow title. After audiences grow to understand the bond she has with Natasha, her decision to become the new Black Widow will give Natasha a legacy in the MCU. Meanwhile, the continued use of the Black Widow name keeps a well-known name around for Marvel Studios to use in marketing, merchandise, etc. Another reason why Yelena becoming Black Widow is smart for the MCU is it means Florence Pugh will continue to be featured. She’s a rising Hollywood star after roles in Fighting With My Family, Midsommar, and Oscar-nominated performance in Little Women. The talent she has already displayed is incredible, and at just 24 years old, Pugh could be part of the MCU for a long time.

Future MCU Movies The New Black Widow Could Appear In

New Black Widow Predicting Yelena Belova’s MCU Future

Looking towards the future, there are several potential MCU movies that Yelena Belova could return in. If she is being handed the reins of the Black Widow mantle and franchise, then it would stand to reason that Black Widow 2 could be in Yelena’s future. A sequel could explore what happens to her after the events of Black Widow but also continue Yelena’s story after Avengers: Endgame. The possibility of Black Widow ending with Yelena deciding to become the next Black Widow will likely leave fans wanting to see her future adventures. Plus, Yelena’s starring role in Black Widow 2 could allow for Melina (Rachel Weisz) and/or Red Guardian (David Harbour) to return in future MCU movies as well.

There is also a strong chance that Yelena will appear in other MCU movies outside of a possible Black Widow franchise. One of the most likely landing spots for Yelena could be in a Thunderbolts movie. Yelena has ties with the team in the comics, although it was actually Natasha disguised as Yelena. This could potentially be set up in Black Widow, as Thunderbolt Ross is set to make an appearance. He has led some iterations of the Thunderbolts in the comics, and he may meet and then recruit Yelena to be part of a possible MCU team. This would potentially give Yelena another starring role.

Marvel could also utilize Yelena in multiple other properties in supporting appearances. She is sure to be a candidate to appear in the next Avengers movie alongside Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, and so on. There is also the chance that Marvel could use Yelena to take Natasha’s place in future comic storyline adaptations that haven’t been done yet. We could even see Yelena serve as a love interest for a potentially rebooted MCU Daredevil since Matt Murdock and Natasha have a long-running romance in the comics that can’t happen now.

Will Black Widow 2 Happen With Yelena Belova?

While Yelena could appear in many other MCU movies, it is not yet known if Marvel Studios will wind up making Black Widow 2 with her as the star. The chances of a sequel happening would be more clear now if Black Widow wasn’t delayed. The critical reception and financial performance of the movie will have a hand in deciding the fate of the franchise. At this point, it is unclear how well Black Widow will perform thanks to the pandemic. The solo film still has a sizeable budget and will need a good box office run to turn a profit for Marvel and Disney. Limited theater capacity could make this more challenging to pull off. Still, the studios might be more forgiving if Black Widow under-performs financially, given the unusual circumstances of its eventual release. On the flip side, if Black Widow still manages to perform on-par with other MCU movies, there should be great faith that Black Widow 2 would be an even bigger hit.

Any future Black Widow movies will surely give Yelena Belova a prominent role, but there’s still a chance that Natasha Romanoff could be featured too. Other gaps in Natasha’s life could be explored, and these could be revisited with flashbacks if Yelena is also present. For instance, now that Yelena and Natasha seemingly rekindle their relationship in Black Widow, perhaps they meet again during the five-year time jump featured in Avengers: Endgame. This could allow Marvel Studios to keep pushing Florence Pugh as the star, while also bringing back Scarlett Johansson for a limited time. In any case, the future of Yelena Belova’s Black Widow should be more apparent once her debut happens.
