New Girl: 10 Most Underrated Characters From The Series

Jess and the boys are the heart of New Girl, but there are several supporting characters that deserve a lot more recognition from fans.

It’s obvious that New Girl possessed an immensely strong main cast. It is surely what allowed it to become one of the most popular sitcoms of its time. The unbreakable friendships between the roommates of the loft provided not only an abundance of laughs but a high degree of relatability as well. That is what would allow the series to succeed.

Yet, even with this being the case, what ultimately makes this show elite is its side characters. One cannot help but admire the plethora of remarkable choices the showrunners chose for it. Although characters like Schmidt and Nick are marvelous, we must also shine a light on members of the outstanding supporting cast.

10 Tran

For a character who remains silent, Tran is absolutely hysterical. He is of course remembered most for his park scene with Nick. Initially standoffish, Nick quickly would not only change his mind about Tran, but he soon considered him a close friend.

In a matter of mere seconds, Tran became a fatherly figure to Nick, as it provided him an outlet to vent his problems and insecurities. From a comedic standpoint, Tran is also quite hilarious with his facial expressions. His friendship with Nick also would blossom later on in the series, as he would be invited to both Thanksgiving and his wedding.

9 Robby

Robby is a great example of a stellar side character. Overall, he is not only immensely funny, but he plays a pretty significant role in the development of the show. Although he and Jess seemed like a good fit as a couple, this would drastically change when they discovered that they were cousins.

This would be one of the funniest parts of the show’s entire run and of course, would eventually lead to Nick and Jess getting back together. However, focusing back on Robby, even in earlier seasons he was marvelous. It is a shame that he would never develop into a series regular, but he definitely provided a lot in his limited appearances.

8 Abby

Although Abby would cause a lot of mayhem during her short three-episode stint on the show, she was nothing short of spectacular. Linda Cardellini did such a great job playing the polar opposite of Jess. She deserves a lot of credit, as it displayed how amazing her range truly is.

Abby as a character is definitely flawed, but the show did a great job completing her story in such a limited time. We learned about her insecurities, as she always felt that she was in Jess’s shadow. However, her conclusion was quite nice, as she was determined to turn her life around after an uplifting talk with her sister.

7 Sadie

It is still difficult to accept that Sadie never would blossom into a full-time role on the show. Her character never failed to make us laugh. One has to admire the high degree of confidence and self-awareness that she possessed, as she never failed to be genuine.

Although we would only end up seeing her for a handful of episodes, she did seem like a very good influence on Jess. Overall, one definitely could argue that she was immensely underrated. It is hard to find a single flaw in her character.

6 Benjamin

Here’s the thing; Benjamin absolutely is not a character you are supposed to like. He relentlessly bullies Schmidt, which naturally leaves a poor taste in the audience’s mouth. However, even with this being so, one has to pay respect to how well his portrayer, David Neher, does his job.

Benjamin was honestly a huge influence on Schmidt’s progression as a character. This is because of the fact that he would no longer seek Benjamin’s approval as the show continued on. Overall, he was a necessary evil for the show and did a great job doing so.

5 Sam

Sam is different than the rest of the cast, as it is hard to find a single quirky character trait about him. This is not necessarily a bad thing though, as he was a pretty marvelous character at the end of the day.

Although Jess and Nick were destined to be together, viewers probably wouldn’t have been too upset if he ended up being the one. He is definitely a funny character and provided a nice balance for Jess, while also having solid depth as well. Oh, and him punching Nick was always hysterical.

4 Nadia

Although her appearances were limited in number, it is absolutely clear that Nadia is one of the best side characters from the show. This is a fair argument to make, as she not only is hilarious but also immensely original.

She was a very tough character, which would end up leading to one of Schmidt’s, shall we say, most gruesome injuries ever. Her influence on Robby while dating was also evident, as he changed his entire wardrobe whilst in their relationship. She gave viewers some of their hardiest laughs, so she warrants a spot here.

3 Bearclaw

My goodness, Bearclaw was quite a hoot. This should not be very surprising, as he was played by the hilarious Josh Gad. However, focusing on Bearclaw, this little buddy would leave quite the impact in his short time with the series.

Nick would mistakenly aim to set him up with Jess, without realizing she was actually interested in his friend, Andy. However, to make matters worse for him, he would catch Jess with Sam, which would lead to his “heartbreak.” Overall though, he simply was hysterical and definitely should have been used more.

2 Rhonda

Rhonda was a very fun character for the show. Just like Winston, she was obsessed with pranks, which worked out perfectly when they were together. Yet, she also did not know how to prank properly, so she often would go far too extreme when doing so.

When looking at her prank resume, she pretended to be a stabbing victim, married Winston, and pranked him by saying he was the father of their baby. The only one who would enjoy these pranks was, of course, Winston. Overall, Rhonda was just hysterical and one of the wackiest components of the show’s entire run.

1 Bob

Bob is a great character for the show. He absolutely was a strong protector of Jess, which was made clear by his hesitation to accept Nick. The whole dynamic of Bob being like Nick was very interesting, as it was used as the reason why he was not keen on their relationship.

However, as time would go on, it became clear that he warmed up to Nick, which was overall a great display of character development on his hand. Also, his humor never failed to make the audience laugh, which would help his value to the show.
