New Girl: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Winston
New Girl’s Winston begins as the normal one and tries to play the serious character that juxtaposes the others. His changes make no sense, though.

New Girl followed the quirky Jess as she attempted to get her life together after her long-term boyfriend cheated on her. She moves into a loft and becomes close to her new roommates, including Winston. Winston begins the show as the normal one and tries to play the serious character that juxtaposes the others in the loft.
This serious character quickly disappears as more is revealed about Winston’s unique and a tendency toward the random type of personality. A lot of new information is revealed about Winston throughout the series and, in retrospect, a lot about the character doesn’t make sense. Here are some things about Winston throughout New Girl that make no sense.
10 Appearing Out Of Nowhere
Winston isn’t in the pilot episode of the show, instead, it is Coach who is living in the loft. The next episode Winston happens to come back from playing basketball in Latvia and moves back into the loft without much mention of Coach after that until he returns. He moves back into the loft without much more explanation than that.
9 Used To Play Basketball Professionally
The characters refer to this a lot at the beginning of the show as Winston moves back into the loft after playing basketball in Latvia for two years. Winston talks about this, but the audience never really sees it beyond a few quick flashbacks. Winston doesn’t play much basketball after returning to the loft, which is odd since that was his job for two years and he seems to miss it.
8 His Pranks
Later in the series, Winston becomes known for his terrible pranks that are either way too extreme and dangerous or make absolutely no impact at all. It’s a hilarious part of his personality, but it isn’t introduced until later in the series and it seems to come out of nowhere and not fully make sense.
Even though it doesn’t fully make sense, Winston’s pranks are part of what makes him a unique character on the show.
7 His Obsession With Cats
Winston mentions cats throughout the show in a low-key way where he just likes them, but when he gets a cat of his own called Ferguson his obsession is immediately apparent. Winston started out as a pretty straight-edge character and the show gradually introduced hidden aspects of his personality that made him a more unique and entertaining watch within the show, and his obsession with cats is one of these random additions.
6 His Wardrobe
Winston began the show wearing plain solid color clothing and suits when he had an interview. Winston’s wardrobe dramatically changes throughout the series as he decides to wear uniquely brightly colored prints and Hawaiian shirts.
It’s a welcome and fun change that gives the character even more personality, but also something about the character that doesn’t make any sense.
5 His Various Jobs
Winston begins the show as a professional basketball player who returns to America after playing overseas. He doesn’t know what to do next so he jumps around from job to job, usually as a temp or an assistant for an eccentric radio host and ends up as a police officer.
His career path makes no sense especially in comparison with everyone else in the loft like how Jess is committed to being a teacher and Schmidt has had the same job for years.
4 Growing Up With Nick
The show brings up and has flashbacks of Nick and Winston growing up together, but in the present, their relationship doesn’t seem like they grew up together. Nick and Schmidt seem to be closer and went to college together, but Winston and Nick don’t seem as close or like they’ve known each other their whole lives. The show doesn’t really flesh out their relationship or past besides a few flashbacks.
3 Winston And CeCe’s Friendship
This friendship seemed to come out of nowhere and it was a random pairing at first that didn’t seem to make sense.
Although it started off as a random pairing, CeCe and Winston quickly became a fan favorite pair and the writers made a good move pairing them up for Winston and CeCe mess arounds, but it still didn’t make much sense in the show.
2 Being A Player
At the beginning of the show, it’s surprising that Winston is revealed to have been a player in the dating world. Apparently, he used to be a player when he was younger and a professional basketball player, but as the character’s personality is revealed he’s incredibly caring, emotional, and devoted in a relationship and this past player persona doesn’t make much sense.
1 All Of His Nicknames For Himself
Throughout the show, Winston claims to have countless nicknames that he usually gives himself. It’s another quirky and hilarious aspect of his personality, but it also makes no sense. He says he used to be a bully when he was younger and his own catchphrase was Brown Lightning. He’s called himself Winnie the Bish and Prank Sinatra as well.
