Romance was always a big part of New Girl, as each main character had multiple partners throughout the show’s seven seasons. Undoubtedly, though, the most significant couples were Jess and Nick, and Schmidt and Cece.

Nick and Jess’ relationship was the story of two friends realizing they were soulmates, whereas Schmidt and Cece’s romance was about a duo whose physical attraction for each other developed into an emotional connection.

Both of these relationships ended in marriage and kids, but who was the better couple? The fairest way to figure that out is to look at the best aspects or moments of each romance.

10 Jess And Nick: First Kiss

During a game of True American, Nick and Jess were locked out of the living room together and instructed to kiss. As it was just a part of the game, the rest of the gang egged them on, including Jess’ boyfriend at the time, Sam.

However, Nick was dead against it, as he didn’t want his first smooch with Jess to be in those circumstances. He even took drastic measures to avoid it by climbing out onto the window ledge. Later that night, when the two were alone, Nick grabbed Jess and gave her a real first kiss, and it was incredibly passionate.

9 Schmidt And Cece: The Proposal

Schmidt’s marriage proposal to Cece was simple yet very romantic. He’d just found out that Cece loved him, and she’d just discovered he was single. The two then ran into each other at the front door of the loft, and both of them revealed how they felt. Finally, Schmidt got down on one knee and proposed, and she enthusiastically accepted.

No big romantic gesture or even an engagement ring was needed; it was just two people in love sharing a beautiful moment together.

Falling in love with someone immediately upon meeting them seems unlikely, yet that’s exactly what happened to Nick.

During their first tenure as a couple, Schmidt and Cece had a pregnancy scare. As it was still very early in the relationship, it would’ve been understandable if Schmidt freaked out, yet he didn’t. He was actually happy with the news of an impending baby. And when Cece worried about the whole thing, he reassured her that he would support her no matter what.

Eventually, they found out it was just a false alarm, but that doesn’t take away from how mature Schmidt acted throughout the whole ordeal.

6 Jess And Nick: Always There For Each Other

From helping with family issues to cheering the other up after a bad day, Nick and Jess did countless good things for one another. It didn’t matter if they were a couple or just friends at the time; they were always there when needed.

5 Schmidt And Cece: He Supported Her Career

Cece had an up and down professional life. She was a model, then she became a bartender, and eventually, she found her calling as a modeling agent.

Schmidt supported her throughout her career changes. He assisted her in making a drink when her bartending skills were being tested, he helped her study for her GED, and he did a lot to establish her modeling agency. His own insecurities got the better of him a little bit when she was a model, but his later actions made up for it.

4 Jess And Nick: She Got Him To Open Up

Nick was a very closed-off person who never talked about his feelings, which became an issue in several of his relationships.

Yet when he was with Jess for the first time, he finally opened up and communicated. Even after their initial relationship ended, he still wasn’t as open with his future girlfriends as he was with her. In fact, he was more comfortable talking to Jess about his relationship with Reagan than he was talking to Reagan herself. There was nobody Nick trusted more than Jess.

3 Schmidt And Cece: Changed Each Other For The Better

When they first met, Schmidt was a superficial womanizer, whereas Cece was a cold manipulator. But throughout their relationship, both of them became better people.

Schmidt went from a guy who didn’t want to leave a party to help Jess when she was being stood up to a truly selfless individual. And Cece started to be a lot kinder to people in general instead of talking down to everyone who wasn’t Jess.

2 Jess And Nick: Chemistry

Despite being polar opposites, Nick and Jess always had incredible chemistry. They simply clicked as a duo whether they were helping each other out or bantering back or forth. Jess’ natural enthusiasm even brought out a more light-hearted side of Nick that didn’t seem to be there when they first met.

This chemistry allowed the pair to become great friends very quickly. And it didn’t go away when they became a couple, as they had a very passionate romance.

1 Schmidt And Cece: The Wedding

On the day he was supposed to be getting married, Schmidt made a noble attempt to fly to Portland and convince Cece’s mother to attend the wedding. The idea backfired as the plane was stuck on the tarmac for most of the day.

The wedding didn’t turn into a disaster, though. Cece’s mom still showed up, as it turned out Schmidt (unbeknownst to him) already convinced her to attend the big day because of his many voicemails. And as for Schmidt, he attended his own reception via video call and was still able to take part in the festivities. When he eventually got home, he and Cece had a beautiful ceremony in apartment 4D with all of their close friends and family.
