New Girl 5 Ways Winston Grows (& 5 He Regresses)

While New Girl is full of hilarious situations and fun relationships, at its core, the show is really about growing up. The residents of apartment 4D learn lessons about life, love, and themselves, all while making mistakes that crack viewers up.

Once he’s introduced in the second episode, Winston Bishop appears to be one of the most stable of the main characters. On the hunt for a job after being removed from a professional basketball team in Latvia, Winston appears to make all of the right grown-up decisions — at first. Just like his roommates, Winston has plenty of periods on the show in which he regresses to immature behavior and then is forced to grow up.

10 Grows: Apologizes To Shelby

Not long after being introduced to Winston, the audience also learns about Shelby. He sees her as the girl he was dating before he left for Latvia; she sees him as the guy who hooked up with her and never called back.

Winston doesn’t initially realize how unfairly he treated her, but once Shelby explains herself to him, not only does he apologize for his actions, but he actively tries to change. Their relationship doesn’t work out in the end, but Winston does grow as a result.

9 Regresses: Moves Into The Loft

New Girl 5 Ways Winston Grows (& 5 He Regresses)

In the second episode, Winston makes the move into the loft after returning to the United States. That might not seem like such a questionable decision, but it’s also revealed that the loft is the first place Nick, Schmidt, and Winston moved into after college, meaning Winston is taking a step backward.

He and Nick have an entire conversation at one point about not thinking they would be in that position in their 30s. Winston could have made the decision to move in with a family member or use his savings to find somewhere new, but he chooses to live with his college buddies and flounders through temp work for almost a year before getting himself back on track.

8 Grows: Stands Up For Himself At The Radio Station

When Winston does finally find a full-time job in the first season, it’s at a radio station as an assistant. He’s not happy with the job, and though he does some pretty immature things to express that, he eventually makes himself heard.

Winston decides to voice his opinions, relay his experience to his superiors, and ask them for a chance at his own show instead of being an assistant to someone he doesn’t like. He gets the shot, though it is for a show that runs in the middle of the night.

7 Regresses: Worships Walt Miller

New Girl 5 Ways Winston Grows (& 5 He Regresses)

Like most of the characters in New Girl, Winston has some complicated parental relationships. His father left when he was very young, and he ended up looking up to Nick’s father during his childhood. However, Walt isn’t the best parental figure to idolize.

When Nick tries to explain the kind of con artist tricks that Walt pulls, Winston spends much of the conversation defending Walt. He even still calls him Pop-Pop. Winston is too busy enjoying the attention Nick’s dad pays him to realize how Walt takes advantage of him, and later, Jess.

6 Grows: Breaks Up With Daisy

New Girl 5 Ways Winston Grows (& 5 He Regresses)

In the second season, Winston meets Daisy while he’s struggling to connect with women. The two have a relationship that proves challenging because of how much she travels. It also proves challenging when, in the third season, he thinks she’s cheating on him.

Winston sees all of the evidence laid out in front of him when she asks him to watch her cat for the day. At first, he’s in denial, but after talking with Nick, he understands that he’s being played. He has a temporary period of insanity in which he considers killing her cat, but ultimately, does the mature thing and asks Daisy about it. When she tells him the truth, he breaks up with her and takes custody of Ferguson.

5 Regresses: Puts All His Energy Into Ferguson

While it’s perfectly fine to love your pets and treat them like a member of the family, Winston goes a little overboard with Ferguson. After the breakup with Daisy, Ferguson becomes Winston’s whole world.

In fact, Winston puts so much effort into taking care of Ferguson that he doesn’t even notice when women are interested in him. His friends start to worry about him, prompting one of his hilarious lines, “If I were off my rocker, would I take a weekly selfie with my cat?”

4 Grows: Attends The Police Academy

Basketball, nannying, and sports radio don’t work out for Winston. When he attempts to shadow Schmidt at work to see what a different career path could look like, Winston discovers something about himself: he’s more observant than people give him credit for.

His observations and note-taking allow Schmidt to one-up a new hire at work. It also gives Winston some insight into his potential as a police officer. He makes the decision to take the entrance exam and join the police academy, giving himself a new path in life that actually suits him.

3 Regresses: Pulls Pranks With Rhonda

New Girl 5 Ways Winston Grows (& 5 He Regresses)

For someone who eventually proves himself to be incredibly observant, Winston isn’t great at reading the room. Known as the one member of the group who is terrible at pranks, he starts dating Rhonda, who also has a love for outrageous pranks.

The two never seem to be able to tell when their pranks go too far or when the rest of their friends are uncomfortable. At different points, their friends want to be adults in different situations, but Winston follows Rhonda’s lead instead and continues to pull pranks right up until they break up.

2 Grows: Starts A Family With Aly

New Girl 5 Ways Winston Grows (& 5 He Regresses)

After not having the best father figures to look up to as a kid, Winston isn’t so sure he’s going to be a great dad when he and Aly take the next step in their relationship. At first, he thinks finding his own dad will change that. Both Aly and Jess try to track down his father, but it’s Jess who introduces him, though it’s ultimately to the wrong man.

Jess helps Winston to realize that just because he didn’t have his dad around growing up doesn’t mean that he’s going to be a bad father. He and Aly have a son during the course of the show, and Winston gradually feels more and more comfortable as a parent. The flash-forward even reveals that he and Aly have at least four more children.

1 Regresses: Refuses To Back Down From Training

When Coach returns to the series in the third season, it shows a different side of all of the guys. All three of the roommates refuse to let Coach see them as anything less than his idea of manly. That means doing things like staying out too late at a club or threatening a woman’s new boyfriend. For Winston, that also means refusing to back down when Coach shows his athletic prowess.

Coach decides to get back into the personal training circuit, but he wants to start by training Nick. Winston tags along, even though Coach repeatedly warns Winston that he’s going to aggravate the same injury that ended his basketball career. Winston refuses to back down, not wanting to be seen as a quitter even though Coach’s advice is smart and sound.
