New Girl Thanksgiving Episodes Ranked

New Girl was a Fox series that ran for seven seasons about Jess Day, a quirky teacher, who moves into a loft in LA with three men after she discovers her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Over the course of the series, the group became more than roommates, they truly became a close-knit group of friends. In doing so they end up spending several, memorable Thanksgiving holidays together. There are five Thanksgiving-themed episodes over the course of the series, each full of their own unique, hilarious dysfunction. Below is a subjective rating of the episodes, ranked from good to great.

“Last Thanksgiving” Season 6, Episode 7

New Girl Thanksgiving Episodes Ranked

The final Thanksgiving episode of New Girl is aptly called “Last Thanksgiving” and serves as Season 6, Episode 7 in the series. After not including a Thanksgiving episode in Season 5, Season 6 returned to the tradition of a dysfunctional holiday meal in the loft. Schmidt invites his father to join in the festivities, only for him to arrive completely broken-hearted. Meanwhile, Jess navigates her complicated relationship with Robbie who is currently in a wheelchair due to a series of painful accidents caused by Jess in previous episodes.

The episode does mention the fact that they did celebrate Thanksgiving the year previously, and also mentions how messy their celebrations usually end up, but all things considered, this particular event actually ends up being comparably normal compared to some of their previous attempts. The episode serves to show how far the characters have come and grown, while still retaining their charm and keeping to their expected antics.

“Thanksgiving III” Season 3, Episode 10

“Thanksgiving III” is the first and only Thanksgiving episode in which Jess and Nick are actually dating each other during the holiday. After Coach gives Nick a hard time for allegedly becoming soft since dating Jess, Nick sets out to toughen up his image. He takes over planning the holiday for the group and moves the celebration into the woods supplied only with a cooler full of beer and delusions of a hunter-gatherer holiday feast.

Cece, Schmidt, and Coach are in a bit of an awkward place because Cece and Coach went on one date and then she never called him back and Schidmt is obviously still in love with her at this point. Winston reveals he isn’t much of an outdoorsman and he, Cece, and Jess do their foraging at a nearby grocery store. Jess ends up in the hospital when she eats fish that Nick had prepared in her attempt to support him. The group ends up celebrating in her hospital room. The ending captures what makes these Thanksgiving episodes so important to this show. The main characters have chosen to create their own family dynamic together and the important thing during this holiday is for them to spend it together, and where they do that is secondary to that fact.

“Thanksgiving IV” Season 4, Episode 9

In the fourth season of New Girl, the gang spends their Thanksgiving set up on blind dates for an event Schmidt declares “Bangsgiving.” Coach sets Jess up with Ryan, another teacher from their school who Jess has a crush on. Jess hasn’t dated seriously since her breakup with Nick, and there is a rule that she can’t date a teacher while she is the vice principal, yet Coach knows there’s something between them worth perusing. Cece’s date doesn’t show up until after the evening has wrapped so she spends the evening under the impression that Schmidt deliberately didn’t set her up with someone.

This episode does a lot of emotional leg work in reuniting Schmidt and Cece and puts them back on the path to end the season engaged. It also creates the foundation for Jess’ next significant love interest. It’s a surprisingly romantic episode, but still maintains the general unique vibe that Thanksgivings have in the loft. Coach is intimidated by his date’s upper body strength and Winston reveals his fear of lunch ladies while Nick brings his elderly friend Tran as his so-called date.

“Thanksgiving” Season 1, Episode 6

The first Thanksgiving in the loft is certainly a memorable one for both audience and characters. Jess organizes a last-minute Thanksgiving dinner with zero preparation as an excuse to spend time with Paul, a fellow teacher she has a crush on at her school. Her plan ends up creating a longstanding tradition for the group, but with some casualties along the way.

Having never cooked a turkey before, Jess is completely out of her depth and ends up tossing the frozen turkey into the dryer in an attempt to thaw it in time to cook. After that causes a mini fire and smokes the gang out of the loft, they relocate across the hall and things get worse. They discover the body of their elderly neighbor which traumatizes Paul. All in all the day doesn’t go as planned, but everything turns out just fine the next morning in line for Black Friday shopping when Paul arrives still interested in Jess. The first Thanksgiving episode of the series sets the standard for these episodes and is hard to beat.

“Parents” Season 2, Episode 8

The second Thanksgiving episode, “Parents” in Season 2 is the best Thanksgiving episode in the series. Jess invites her long-divorced parents, Joan and Bob – played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner – for dinner in her latest attempt to get them back together, a stunt she’s been pulling since she was a kid. She enlists Nick’s help to flirt with Joan to make Bob jealous which just adds to the chaos of the day.

The episode helps to explore Jess’ backstory by introducing her parents, and the excellent performances by Curtis and Reiner make it so clear why Jess has grown into the woman she is today. Winston and Cece’s special bond also comes on display in this episode when they facilitate a manliness competition between Schmidt and his cousin Big Schmidt. It finds a way to somehow be funnier and more dysfunctional than the previous Thanksgiving episode which literally included a dead body and a burnt turkey. That’s why “Parents” is the best Thanksgiving episode of New Girl.
