New Girls Robby Plot Hole Did He Lie To Schmidt

New Girl was packed with colorful characters and a lot of fun moments, but underneath all the laughs and lighthearted moments, there are a couple of plot holes that fans have caught over the years, such as Robby lying to Schmidt about music. The world of TV has seen a variety of sitcoms in recent years, and one of the most popular ones is New Girl, created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The show premiered on Fox in 2011 and came to an end in 2018 after seven seasons and a lot of memorable moments and jokes, as well as many ups and downs in the lives of the main characters.

New Girl follows Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), a young, bubbly teacher who one bad day found out that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Jess moved out of the home they shared as fast as she could and found three strangers looking for a roommate through an online ad. Although some of them were initially reluctant to let her stay, they ended up welcoming her in, and after a period of adjustment that wasn’t easy for anyone, Jess became very close to her roommates Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), and Winston (Lamorne Morris), with her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) also joining the fun. The group went through all types of problems together and they also met a variety of characters, of which some returned later on in the show, as is the case of Robby (Nelson Franklin).

Robby McFerrin was introduced in the premiere episode of New Girl season 2, where Schmidt threw a party at the bar Nick worked at to celebrate that his penis cast (as he famously broke it in season 1 after a wild date with Cece’s roommate, Nadia) had been removed. Cece arrived at the party with Robby, her new boyfriend, and that obviously didn’t sit well with Schmidt, who still had feelings for Cece. Of course, Schmidt didn’t waste much time and approached Robby to get to know him but mostly to figure out why Cece was attracted to him, so he asked him a couple of questions, among those if he was in a band. Robby replied that he didn’t like music, leaving Schmidt confused as his answers got increasingly boring – but Robby not liking music ended up creating a plot hole.

Robby stayed around for a while until Cece told him that she was “running out of time” and if she wanted to have kids she had to do it soon, but Robby wasn’t interested, so they broke up. However, Robby returned in New Girl season 6, now as the president of the “Single and Sufficient” club, of which Jess was a member. The group had a strict rule of no romance as they were all single by choice, but Robby and Jess quickly bonded during a glamping trip with Cece and Schmidt. During that trip, Robby and Jess sang a song together, with Robby playing the guitar, and a couple of episodes later, while getting to know each other, Robby told Jess about how he met Carlos Santana when he delivered pizza to his studio and he somehow learned that he played bass and “asked him to sit in”, and that’s how Robby began a “brief career as a studio session musician” when he was in junior high school. This inconsistency could have been somewhat justified if Robby hadn’t said that it happened when he was in junior high school, as it would have been believable to an extent that he had that brief career after he broke up with Cece.

Robby left again in New Girl season 6 after finding out that he and Jess are third-cousins, and so the mysteries of his backstory were never solved. Surely, Robby not liking music and then turning out to be a guitar and bass player as well as a former studio session musician doesn’t affect his arc nor that of Jess, but it’s definitely a detail that fans have pointed out and that has bothered some as it does change his personality a little bit.
