New Gods Cancellation Means Snyder Cut History Lesson Should Be DCEU Canon

With the New Gods movie canceled, Darkseid’s presence in the DCEU is limited to his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and the film’s history lesson section should be canon in order to provide a springboard for new stories. Ava DuVernay, writer and director of the canceled DCEU New Gods movie has implied that Waner Bros. decided not to go forward with her film due to the release of Zack Synder’s Justice League. Both films sought to introduce Darkseid properly to the DCEU (having been only hinted at in the 2017 cut of Justice League).

Darkseid and the New Gods were created by comic book legend Jack Kirby back in 1971. Kirby crafted grand histories and mythologies for the Fourth World, initially separate from the rest of the DC titles. Over time Darkseid and the New Gods crossed paths with the Justice League in his quest for the Anti-Life Equation that would eliminate free will and grant him power over the universe. One of the many improvements in Zack Snyder’s Justice League over the 2017 theatrical cut is the reinstatement of Darkseid to the story. In the history lesson section of the film, an extended flashback showed his attempt 5,000 years ago to conquer Earth using three Mother Boxes. The theatrical cut of Justice League had a truncated version of the scene, and swapped out Darkseid for Steppenwolf, to diminishing effect.

The restored history lesson scene, as well as Darkseid’s ominous presence in the rest of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, gives the DC villain greater weight as an antagonist within the wider DCEU. It’s acknowledged that some elements of the film conflict with the established DCEU canon. However, with the history lesson being set 5,000 years in the past there is no narrative reason why Darkseid’s introduction in Zack Synder’s Justice League couldn’t be canon for the New Gods. This could then be used as a launch point for stories featuring the New Gods going forward.

Warner Bros. has gone to great lengths to make it clear to fans that the “Snyderverse” is not moving forward, and that the release of Zack Synder’s Justice League completed his trilogy of films (despite setting up future storylines). The #RestoreTheSnyderVerse movement is still strong though, with Snyder’s fans holding out hope that the Warner Bros./Discovery merger will enable him to complete the story he’s started. Notwithstanding this, the upcoming release of The Flash movie is set to bring in the multiverse. With this is endless possibilities for Darkseid and the New Gods to be brought back into the DCEU main canon, and the history lesson scene would be the way to do it. It sets up Darkseid’s drive and sheer power with minimal screen time, laying the groundwork for him to be pitted against the Justice League properly in future movies, in whatever form that takes.

The New Gods canceled movie had great potential that sadly was not meant to be. However, Darkseid is arguably the top villain of the DCEU, and it’s unlikely Warner Bros. wouldn’t want him and the rest of the New Gods in the movies going forward. Having successfully established him in Zack Snyder’s Justice League it seems illogical not to build on the solid groundwork laid by Snyder in the history scene.
