The official Godzilla YouTube channel has uploaded a short film commemorating the 50th anniversary of 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah (which was localized as Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster for the film’s U.S. release). The 5-minute kaiju brawl is directed by tokusatsu veteran Kazuhiro Nakagawa and was shot only two months ago over three days. The elaborate costumes for Godzilla and Hedorah were recycled from 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, which was the last live-action confrontation between the two monsters.

Despite Hedorah’s iconic design, the grotesque sludge behemoth has rarely made any live-action appearances apart from his debut film. His inclusion in Final Wars was extremely brief – less than 30 seconds of total screen time – amounting to little more than a cameo rather than a full-on appearance. Despite this, Hedorah has persisted as a fan-favorite villain in Godzilla’s expansive rogue’s gallery, with many fans clamoring for Hedorah to return in Legendary’s ongoing MonsterVerse franchise. Luckily, it doesn’t seem as though Godzilla’s creators have forgotten about Hedorah quite yet.

Godzilla’s official YouTube channel recently uploaded a short film that pits the two monsters in their first substantial rematch in 50 years. The short is filled with references and easter eggs for longtime fans, including musical and visual homages to the original film. Hedorah is even defeated similarly to the first film, with Godzilla pinning the monster against exposed electrical cables before blasting it with his iconic atomic breath attack. Ever since the outset of the Reiwa Era of Godzilla films (kicking off roughly around 2016 with the release of Hideaki Anno’s Shin Godzilla), Godzilla films have primarily relied on CGI to portray their towering monsters. The new technology has allowed tokusatsu filmmakers to realize elaborate set pieces that were previously impossible with practical costumes and miniature cityscapes. However, as this video aptly demonstrates, there is still an inexplicable charm in seeing two grown adults duke it out while wearing bulky costumes.

Nakagawa’s film shows that there can still be room for practical monster effects in the modern era of kaiju films. Although Legendary likely won’t be switching over any time soon, Toho Studios has an opportunity to return to form for future installments of the mainline franchise. Hideaki Anno himself considered using practical costumes for Shin Godzilla, going as far as creating an entire animatronic Godzilla before scrapping it in favor of CGI (which still used a motion capture actor for the monster’s movements). Hopefully, Godzilla vs. Hedorah will inspire future Godzilla filmmakers to consider practical monster effects for their films.
