In advance of its fast approaching February 7th release date, 38 Studios and Big Huge Games have released a new trailer for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Though the game promises a deep and involving primary quest, today’s trailer offers a look at the risks and rewards awaiting players who stray from the main path.

Narrated by the sultry-voiced Claudia Black (who you may remember from such recent video game roles as Uncharted 3’s Chloe Frazier), the latest Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning trailer takes viewers on a journey through the disparate, varied lands of the titular kingdom. Throughout, the game’s fantastical, color-saturated landscapes make a strong impression, as does the depth of the fiction developed for the world of Amalur.

The brightly colored lands of Amalur stand in stark contrast to the prevailing trend towards gritty realism in video game graphics (yes, I’m comparing it with Skyrim). Unfortunately, players of the game’s notoriously buggy demo may be of the opinion that Kingdoms of Amalur’s visual splendor is attached to a product that (again, like Skyrim, at least on PS3) borders on the unplayable. No less an authority than 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling took to the NeoGAF message boards to set the record straight.

“So to those that have had a horrid demo experience, I’m sorry, it’s on us, our name is the name on the box we care about.”

“I promise you, my word, that demo from a bug perspective is in NO WAY representative of the final code or product.”

“That is not going to change your demo experience, that is likely not going to make you buy it if you decided against it, but you spent your time (which is every bit as valuable to us as your money) playing something we made, and we owe you that much.

“What I can assure you is there was and never will be one short step, or short cut, to ANYTHING we do or make. People that bought our CE and SE are going to realize that even more, as both are way beyond anything, quality wise, I’ve ever purchased.”

Schilling’s candor and willingness to take the blame are refreshing in an industry where spin can be nearly as important as raw news, and his remarks about the KoA: Reckoning Collector’s Editions are on point — those are some seriously extravagant, genuinely collectible sets. In fact, the Signature Edition — priced at a whopping $275, and limited to a 300 copy run — is already sold out. Players who still have interest in the $80 Special Edition or the $200 Collector’s Edition are encouraged to pre-order them now, right here.

Ranters, what do you think of the latest Kingdoms of Amalur trailer? Did you have any trouble with the game’s demo? Will you invest in one of Amalur’s Collector’s Editions? Let us know in the comments below.
