New Manga Gives Darker Twist To My Hero Academia and Naruto

The hero of the new manga, Satan’s Deepest Cry is being ridiculed because demons supposedly love him like Naruto’s eponymous shinobi and for possessing no powers similar to My Hero Academia’s Izuku Midoriya. Interestingly, this hero actually has a demon inside of him like how a Tailed Beast has been sealed inside Naruto and later gains incredible abilities after originally being powerless, which resembles what happens to Midoriya.

In Naruto, the titular shinobi becomes the host to a demon when his father seals the Nine-Tails Beast known as Kurama to protect him from a great enemy. Although this procedure is done out of love, the boy grows up ostracized by society as the people of his village fear and despise him as is the curse of these so-called Jinchuriki, despite possessing incredible powers. Similarly, Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia is born into a world where the vast majority of people have special abilities known as Quirks, some of which are utilized to become superheroes. Midoriya is one of the scant few who doesn’t possess a Quirk and is ridiculed relentlessly as a result, especially as the Quirkless boy dreams and constantly strives to become a hero despite the insurmountability of that goal.

In Satan’s Deepest Cry, Ergera is like Midoriya in that he’s born powerless, except in his world, it isn’t just the vast majority who possess a supernatural ability, but basically everyone. Although this, alone, would be enough to make him the subject of relentless teasing, it is also believed that people who aren’t endowed with powers are loved by demons since God is the one who bestows these gifts as a blessing. Ergera’s predicament, therefore, doesn’t seem as bad as Naruto’s since demons just supposedly have an affinity for him, and even then, it’s just superstition.

Things are much worse than originally believed however; Ergera has a demon inside of him, and embracing that power would require him to bond his soul with Satan himself if he so desires. Feeling powerless, he submits to Satan. Not only does this damn him for all eternity, but this contract releases a spawn of demons on the world, wreaking havoc and death. What makes Ergera’s situation so much more tragic is that he makes this sacrifice to save his girlfriend, the only person who loves and believes in him regardless of his plight. Earlier on in the manga, Ergera not only fails in saving his girlfriend from a group of men who assault her but later learns that she’s suffering from a rare and fatal disease that has but one cure, which, essentially, only the strong can possess.

Although Satan’s Deepest Cry incorporates many elements from Naruto and My Hero Academia, the manga’s dark and twisted plot overshadows these correlations. Even more so, the manga views this world through a harsh, satirical lens throughout the nine chapters that fans have unofficially translated into English. As mentioned earlier, everyone who possesses powers has been blessed by God, and yet, most of these gifted souls are the scum of the earth. Meanwhile, the one character who’s loved by demons and even binds his soul with evil incarnate is one of the few pure people in the series. What does this say about humanity and the God of this world? Not anything good.
