New Manga Turns Sword Art Online Upside Down

The Sword Art Online manga skyrocketed to popularity in part because of the unique predicament the characters found themselves in while trapped inside a virtual reality MMO game. Now, the new manga It All Starts with Playing Game Seriously is attempting to achieve the same epic status through similar means. But rather than trying to escape an MMO, Liu Yi is delving deeper into his world’s virtual reality MMO by devoting 100% of his existence to getting stronger in the game.

Liu isn’t playing just for the sake of playing, however. Nor is he having fun. His dedication and drive derive from an otherworldly experience that transports him into the past. In his future time, the MMO known as [Yuan World] becomes a reality and all of the powerful players in the game, now bestowed with god-like abilities and strength, take control over the real world. Unfortunately, Liu can’t protect himself or his sister because he’d originally done the respectable thing by only playing the game casually and spent the majority of his existence actually focusing on his real life. What would’ve been a wise decision in any other circumstance, therefore, becomes the worst possible choice as his being weak in the game eventually leads to his and his sister’s death.

But this extraordinary time-traveling event into the past presents Liu with a rather tremendous opportunity because he’s been transported to the moment when he first gets the game. So Liu’s next step is clear. He must become the most powerful player so he can protect himself and his sister on the day the world inevitably transforms into a real-life MMO. Written by 路人甘, It All Starts with Playing Game Seriously is pretty much the exact opposite of Sword Art Online. Rather than 10,000 users getting trapped inside their MMO and attempting to escape by defeating the boss at the top of a 100-floor castle, this character is striving to fully immerse himself in his MMO.

Ironically, after awaking in this new time, Liu discovers that some things are different than how they originally transpired. Even though the manga has yet to make this realization a big deal, it begs the question as to whether Liu has actually gone back in time or if he’s somehow been transported into an alternate dimension. If the latter is true, then there’s the possibility that [Yuan World] might not become real and Liu is wasting his time trying to get stronger in a game that will stay, well, a game. Regardless, the manga also explores a rather real and present problem in today’s culture where people who completely immerse themselves in their games are viewed as social pariahs. It’s for that reason why some players wreak havoc on humanity once they become gods. Could this new series be a parable?

Unlike Sword Art Online, It All Starts with Playing Game Seriously isn’t officially available in English yet, though fan sites have created their own translations.
